I'm also planning my son's first birthday party and recently talked to a friend who has a 16 mo. old. She talked about her theme, menu, etc., but the most powerful that stood out to me is that she encouraged me to take time out from party duties to spend time with my son. She became frustrated at her son's party because she felt like a bystander, so she finally elected her parents to take over kitchen duty so she and her husband could be with him. Just something to keep in mind. I guess they only turn one once!
The best things I have found are personalized plates from Hallmark.com with my son's picture and ideas on here about how to display his montly photos from his first year. I'm using the colors of stripes and polka dots from his plates as a theme. Good luck!
we're doing the mod monkey theme and getting most things from 1st wishes. i ordered stickers, invitations, and a t-shirt from zazzle because they were cheaper there.
Only using some things from here - will mix in solid blues and greens. Going to try and make my own cake. Getting gumpaste safari animals to put on top.

This is what we're doing. It started out as mainly a surfing theme, but in my attempt to find a surfboard pinata (which I could not) I found an adorable flip flop pinata so maybe now it's just a beach theme pool party. I got sandbuckets to use to hold the salad and pasta salad, and the shovels that came with them will be the serving spoons.
I did get some pf the patterned plates, but I also got some bright/hot pink ones that match. (They cost less so I alternate the stack of plates, pattern then pink then pattern...)
I haven't completed the menu or come up with activities other than a pinata, but it's a pool party so the kids should be occupied with swimming. We'll be playing summer party tunes in the background, Beach Boys, etc.
Thanks all! We're thinking a balloon theme because she loves them I'm going to make a Happy Birthday banner that we can use every year, with photos of her first year. That's about all I've got so far.
