Pregnant after a Loss

Pelvic rest & exercise?

Hi, I just joined the boards yesterday as I found out I'm pregnant again on Thursday night. :)

Because my first pregnancy ended in m/c at six weeks, my midwife has ordered betas, progesterone testing, and placed me on pelvic rest for the next few weeks.

I'm curious as to what anyone else who has been on pelvic rest was told is okay/not okay?  I googled it and it appears that generally it means no sex, no orgasms, no heavy lifting.  I told my midwife that I do hard cardio and heavy lifting 4-5 days a week and she didn't seem concerned at all aside from telling me no lifting over 50 lbs.  She said I could continue whatever I've been doing.

However, I wonder if I should go easier anyway. I do a lot of cardio intervals that leave me drenched, a couple hours a week of competitive swimming with fast sets and sprints, very cardiovascular sessions with my trainer with a lot of abs work, stairs, weighted lunges, etc., in addition to the heavy lifting.

Like I said, she didn't seem concerned but sometimes people have different definitions of hard workouts so I wanted to see what you guys think.  Do you agree with me that I should probably go easier on everything, not just lifting?  I'd really like to hear about anyone else's experiences with this.

Thanks!

Re: Pelvic rest & exercise?

  • I would probably go a little easier on everything just for peace of mind, but if you've already been exercising pretty heavily you should be ok with the modifications the dr suggested.

  • I was specifically told no exercise with my restrictions. I would still try to take it a little easier. If you specifically told your MW what your activity is and she said it was okay, then she may not be very concerned. Do they know what caused your m/c? Also, I wasn't placed restrictions because of my m/c's, I was placed on them because of bleeding.

  • Thanks for your responses.  We don't know what caused the m/c. I didn't specify my workouts to my midwife as she was heading out the door at the time, but I did try to emphasize the hard cardio and intense workouts parts and she didn't blink an eye.

I think I will go easier on everything just for peace of mind. <3

  • I was told, in no uncertain terms no exercise at all while on pelvic rest. Which I was placed on twice, I wasn't even allowed to walk around the mall!!

I guess different doctors have different theories.

  • I would take it easier just for peace of mind. I wasn't even told to "take it easy" when I found out about my SCH but I did anyway for my sanity.

  • I believe it means no sex, exercise or heavy lifting, but if your MW doesn't seem concerned that you exercise maybe that is ok? I would give her a call on Monday just to clarify and make sure to tell her everything you  normally do.

In my opinion, I would definitely take it easier on the workouts, make sure your heart rate does not get too high, because your body is different now being pregnant.
