Pregnant after 35

Pregnant After 40?

I'm pregnant with my second child and 40.  I had my first baby at 38.  Both were without any fertility treatments (I did however have two miscarriages).  My husband and I are still undecided about having a third child, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to do any fertility treatments.

So my question is, if we do decide to have a third child naturally, what do you think our chances are at 41? at 42?  I'd love to hear from those that got pregnant naturally or with fertility treatments after 40.

Re: Pregnant After 40?

  • Despite what you'll read, your lady parts do not magically shrivel up and whither away the day you turn 40.

Will your fertility drop off?  Well, sure.  But since you've already had two children in your late 30s, I would think the chances of a third are still fairly good for you.

But hey, I'm no doctor.  And all things like this are so subjective, it's really impossible to put a number on it.  If you want a third child, go for it.

And FWIW, I was 42 when I had my first.  Not totally ruling out a #2.

  • Thanks Bride,

By the way, your little one is adorable.  I guess I'm just looking for happy ending stories - I know that nobody - even my doctor will know for sure if I can conceive again naturally or otherwise.

Had my first at 39& 7 mos, #2 will be born at 41 & 7 months. Both natural conceptions. If you want to have a 3rd, go for it.  I have decided not to have any more children, because #2 is really tiring me out  and financial reasons.  But it's your choice.

  • I say take your folic acid and prenatal vitamins and go for it!

  • Monkey - if you listen to what the docs say, the odds were already against you getting pregnant naturally at 38 an 40 (like me - naturally preg at 41). But, what the stats can't tell you is your genetics, and how old your eggies think they are. Seriously - don't worry for one second about statistics or odds - you are already ahead of the game! Congrats!
  • I got pregnant naturally at 39 (m/c) and am now 40...I'll deliver 2 months after turning 41.  We're going to go for #2 as soon as possible...I know there are no guarantees, but you might as well have a go at it for #3 if that's what you want.

  • I'm 42, I had my IUD taken out Dec 11 and was pregnant by the end of the month. All natural. Good luck!
  • There is no significant difference between 38 and 41 when it comes to ability to conceive. 25 and 40 - yes, but a couple of years shouldn't change much. I conceived my 1st at 19, 2d at almost 37 and 3d at 40 (all on the first try). Had one m/c between 2d and 3d though. If you want to have another one at 41 - go for it.

  • My best friend got pregnant without medical help at 41.
Another friend got pregnant without medical help at 42.
Another good friend did IVF at 43 and just had a baby

I got pregnant with IVF twice (did IVF because of DH's low sperm/motility not my egg quality).  I was 40 and 43 when I had my kids.

    Good luck!

3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again

  • Thanks for all your stories.
  • Just chiming in with encouragement and my happy ending in the making. I conceived my 1st naturally a few weeks shy of my 42nd birthday.  I was shocked that we were successful in our first month of trying.

Now at 31 weeks, this pregnancy has been completely healthy and counting the days until I hold my little guy.

If you decide for a 3rd  - go for it!!!

  • I got pregnant on the second month we tried and I was 40 at the time--no fertility drugs, just used teh CBEFM, I'll be almost 41 when the baby comes and I'm optimistic that we could have another if we decide to try again.
  • Hi!  I conceived naturally after trying for about four months, and I am 41.  Will be 42 in December and am due in March, 2011.  So far, everything is great, and I have six sons, and actually am feeling better this pregnancy so far.  Good luck!
  • I had Margaux at 41, with zero trouble getting pregnant.  I think it was our second month trying.  We're currently sort of trying for number two, I am 42.  Our main obstacle is having the time and the inclination coincide with when the baby's sleeping.  :)

  • I am 44 years old and 11 weeks pregnant.  This is my first child so I would have to say anything is possible.  My husband and I have been married for 4 years and although having a baby together wasn't out of the question I just assumed it would never happen.  Plus I have endometriosis so that added a whole other element to trying to get pregnant.

For the last 6 months prior to my pregnancy I would have hot flashes 5 days after my period started so I really believed I was in perimenopause and then....this happened.  Crazy!!!!

Our lives are about to do a 180 degree change!  He has an 11 year old son and now a new baby due in February.  So......to answer your question...it can happen!

  • Now I know that there are PLENTY of women 40 and over that are getting pregnant but being able to read your posts and see it with my own eyes makes me feel SO glad to know I'm not alone.  I'm going to be 41 in November and just found out on Monday that we are 4 weeks pregnant.  We have been trying for 2 years with no luck and finally started Chlomid last month.  Thinking I was going to have another disappointing period I was late.  Took the tests (plural lol) and here we are.  I just found this website and it is CHOCK FULL of information.  Thank you ladies for sharing your stories, I know I'm not alone.
