breech delivery or c section?

lo is still in frank breech position at 35 weeks, I plan to try a version, but if that fails my options are to attempt a breech delivery or a c section. neither option is what I want but there may be no choice, which way would you go?

Re: breech delivery or c section?

  • I hope all goes well with your version!

The midwives at my birth center will not even attempt a breech delivery due to liability issues. Most OBs won't do them either ? I don't even know if younger OBs are trained in breech delivery. If you can find a practitioner who has experience in breech deliveries and is willing to try it, I'd say it's worth a shot. Has your MW/OB offered breech delivery as an option?

  • Have you tried acupuncture or chiropractics? They can be very effective at turning a breech baby.

Edit: To actually answer your question:) I would ask your care provider how comfortable they are with delivering a breech baby. If they're comfortable with it and have experience then I'd try to deliver naturally, if not then I would still have to think really hard about a c section.

  • my ob is willing to try a breech delivery, she has delivered breech babies before. also my baby is very small at this point so that is in my favor. she just said that if lo gets stuck, she cannot help her out, we will have to go an emergency c section, and to be prepared for that possibility.

Then I would try for the vaginal delivery. To give you hope, there was a mom on here not too long ago who's breech baby turned at 38 weeks! Good luck!

  • My MW is comfortable delivering breech and has done so many times before.  She said it's all up to whether or not my husband and I are comfortable with it.  Knowing this, I would choose breech delivery.  It's important to me that she has experience and when I asked her the question she answered with absolutely no fear of breech whatsoever -- like it was a run of the mill thing.  That instilled a lot of confidence in me.  There will be very very few emergencies in which I would be willing to have a c-section.

  • have someone use their energy to turn the baby.  Natural doctors are good at this, but u can try it yourself.  use your hands to turn it

Might be talking about me??? My baby went breech at 38w and when I went in for my position check the following week at 39w, the day before my section, it was confirmed that he/she had flipped back.

Try getting some peppermint essential oil and puttng it on the top of the belly where the head is. something about it (the smell???) make baby want to turn away from it. I really believe that's what worked for me.

But to answer your question, I would try the breech delivery as long as your dr. felt comfortable doing it and that you were a good candidate for it.  I know they say emergency sections are harder to recover from than scheduled ones, but I would always wonder if I could have done it.

  • I would attempt breech, at a hospital where an emergency section would be available. You could have the epi placed ahead of time just in case you need anesthesia.

GL with your version! I would definitely go for the breech delivery if you can! Canada has just changed their stance on this, and now recommend breech delivery rather than c-section, but it is sort of a lost art, so it is not available everywhere yet. I'm not sure of your situation or care provider.

  • You still have time for your baby to turn, but you are also very lucky to have such an experienced and willing OB. If that had been available to me, I would have attempted a vaginal birth with DS. We didn't discover that DS had turned (and he turned after 39 weeks, so it can happen) until I arrived at the birth center at 8cm, and there are no providers in my area who deliver breech babies vaginally. If your OB has considerable experience and feels that you and your baby are good candidates, I say go with your gut. I can tell you from experience that if you have a c-section, your options for subsequent births are much more limited.
  • Frank breech is the best type of breech to attempt a vaginal delivery with.  If its an option I'd attempt a vaginal before agreeing to major surgery.

Good luck with your version.  Acupuncture can be really helpful in getting babies to turn as well.

  • My Baby B was delivered by breech extraction but it's actually a little easier/safer to get a breech second twin out than a singleton, since the first twin paves the way, so to speak. I do think it's key to make sure your care provider is comfortable with it (I switched OBs at 31w partly to find one that was experienced and comfortable with breech extractions!).

This, exactly.  My understanding is that no one in the greater Boston area will attempt a breech delivery.  A lot of practitioners are sort of upset by that, but it is what it is...  Good luck!

  • I had a vaginal breech delivery and I'd do it again.  (See bio for birth story for my second child - sorry about the spacing.)  If your doctor is willing, than I would go for it.  I would also read a little Ina May and some other info on positions to aid in breech delivery.  I had an episiotomy to help get my frank-breech out quickly, but I know there are better positions for pushing a breech baby now.
