Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Best way to wean the swaddle and dummy?

So LO loves her swaddle and dummy. She'll battle her way out of the swaddle when she wants to play, but basically she never complains and soon as I wrap her and give her her dummy it just takes a few minutes to drift off.

My reason for wanting to wean these things, is that I think it will only get harder the more mobile she becomes. Plus her night sleep is getting really broken and she can't resettle without the dummy. (She sleeps unswaddled at night because she's so sleepy after her dreamfeed she just drifts off)

At the moment if I leave her unswaddled, during the day,she flails and wriggles and chatters to herself, continually throws her dummy away and then starts to grizzle.

So I was thinking of waiting until we'll be having a couple of days at home just me and her, and then going cold turkey on the swaddle and dummy.

That I would do pick up/put down (I'm not keen to do a CIO method where I leave the room, although I know some babies find it less disruptive if you leave them alone).

Has anyone else weaned the swaddle this late?

Any thoughts? Tips? Experience? Advice?

Thanks

Re: Best way to wean the swaddle and dummy?

  • I weaned the swaddle when DD was 3 months, but in this heat, she is flailing about cause I can't even put her in a sleep sack and she is hating every minute of being "exposed". I am having paci problems too. It falls out of her mouth in the night and when she wakes up she whines and cries out for it and as soon as I give it back to her, she falls instantly back to sleep. Let me know if things work out for you.

  • We weaned from the swaddle about 2 weeks ago - it all has blended together!
She was getting really good at rolling, so we felt it was safest.  And we went pretty much cold turkey, although she's in a sleep sack now and is doing well.
I think the key was for her to get used to sleeping either on her tummy or on her back, she's very comfy on her tummy now. A few nights were rough, we had to go rock her when she flailed around and woke herself up, but she's now pretty much STTN.

I really want to get her out of the dummy habit - but DH constantly gives it to her, I'm trying to limit it to when she is upset, so that it's just a soothie and not anything more.  We'll see how that goes!!

    Good luck!

  • We weaned from the swaddle at 6 months. I started with 1 arm out during naps and did it for a week. Then I did both arms out and finally got rid of it. Took a little over a week and much easier than I thought. I had tried a few other rims with no luck. I don't think he was ready then. I believe they tell u when they are ready. Good luck!

  • We weaned the swaddle by doing one arm out then two, then no swaddle. I think he was around 5.5 months. The dummy we don't plan to get rid of until we have finished sleep training. Pedi said to work on one thing at a time and taking the dummy away while starting sleep training wouldn't be a great idea.

What do you mean by sleep training? Our Lo sleeps really well with the dummy, so I guess I was seeing taking away the dummy as a form of sleep training as she cannot put herself to sleep without it.

  • We weaned from the swaddle cold turkey for naps at 4 months and gradually for bedtime at 4.5 months.  Both went pretty well, and now he sleeps in Halo Sleepsacks (the sleepsacks really helped with the transition).  As far as the dummy/pacifier, we still let him have it whenever he needs it, and I'm not in a rush to take that away.

  • We took a trip at 6 months and Madeline began taking naps while we were out and about sightseeing. She slept in the stroller or the Moby. We kept swaddling at night, but she fussed a lot in the hotel room--she wasn't used to being in the same room as we were--and she'd end up in bed with us unswaddled. So, when we got back, we just stopped swaddling.

As for the pacifier, we still use one. Only for sleeping, however.
