got the bill for the initial bloodwork...

$503.00

seriously!?!  how does lab work cost so much?  and this was for the initial blood work, like CBC, blood type, HIV, etc.  with some insurance coverage it knocks it down to about $250, but still.

I just did the quad screen so i wonder how much that's going to run me!

Re: got the bill for the initial bloodwork...

  • Our first bill was $550 AFTER insurance- blood work, office visit, and ultrasound.  I'll trade you ;)

  • still waiting for the u/s bill!  man, this crap is expensive!!  i get all of my office visits billed at the end so we'll see what that ends up being!
  • Yea all our office visits are billed at the end except the first one.  I am not looking forward to that bill either!
  • Oh, dear... I had great insurance when I had DS and I'm not looking forward to getting the bills this time around.
  • $911.00!!!! Before my insurence switched to my husbands!! We are going to have to eat Ramen Noodles until the baby is born!

  • Wow that sucks! Sometimes I think we have really crappy insurance, but we don't pay anything for labwork, even though I've had to have like 6 blood draws to check my progesterone levels. But my Dr's office does make you prepay and it has to be complete by 3 months before due date.

this is what happened to me too.  i had great insurance when i had DS, then we moved, got new insurance and WHAM! a hit to the gut (or checking account)   It definitely makes me realize how much everything costs now!

  • Mine was like 150ish I think after insurance. I was kinda pissed because they just ran this on me in December before my m/c. I know I am a RN but really? HIV, gonorrhea, hepatitis, AGAIN? Really? What are the chances I picked these up in 3 months... grumble grumble grumble. Yea, called about my high risk U/S and since it was billed as first trimester U/S they don't want to cover it- I left a msg at the high risk clinic for them to call me. They need to recode that ASAP. 250 bucks OOP is not my friend. I definately would not have gotten that if not medically necessary. Poo!
  • Without insurance, the three bills for my initial blood work + the CF screening would have been over $1300.  Thankfully, my insurance is pretty good, and I only had to pay $110 or so of that.

The b/w portion of my NT scan was $160 without insurance, but I owe about $11 of that.

  • My initial bloodwork was $1280.  My insurance thankfully paid it all.

  • omg, i promise i will never complain about my insurance again!  i work for the county and they keep changing our policies and they get worse each time, but NOTHING compared to what you're paying.  i will just be grateful for what i have...i didn't realize it could get that out of control!

  • I couldn't believe the ultrasound was around $900! Thank god for insurance and we didn't pay a thing. I can't believe what they charge for doctor's visit-over $100 here. It's such a racket for as little time you spend with them.

  • Don't get me started.  The ultrasound portion of my NT scan was $4,238.

ETA: the transvag one they did at my first appt at 9w4d was $175.  Go figure.

  • I hear you! I want to cry after every visit to the Dr's because I know I will be getting a bill in the mail 2 weeks after. It's ridiculous how much they charge.

  • Did you do it at your dr office or hospital? I did my blood work at an outside agency to cut down cost. I think it's called medlab. My insurance covered all but $20 and sent the results over to my dr. It might be something to keep in mind for next time.
  • Wow. It really is an outrage what they charge!

I ordered my own tests online at mammasteswell.com. (prenatal profile). It was $174.00. I picked any Labcorp I wanted to go to for the test to be done & I own the records myself instead of the Dr.

  • Thats just insane!!!! Luckily so far my insurance has covered everything. My 20 or so blood tests, 2 ultrasounds, and all my office visits and whatnot.
