Help...ingrown toenail from pedicure?

Ugh!  I so rarely get pedicures but decided to treat myself to some pampering about 2 weeks ago and went for a pedicure.  I suspected at the time that the lady trimmed one of my toenails a bit short (it hurt that day) but since then it's been fine.  Fast forward to Tuesday when I noticed that toe (particularly along the side edge of the nail) was sore when pressure was put on it.  I've been soaking it in warm water a few times a day and today (WARNING-TMI) there was some loose skin that I pulled off and all kinds of puss came out.  OMG, so gross.  So sorry for sharing this.

My question is, now the pressure has been relieved (puss is gone), is it fixed?  It feels better but I don't know if it's just a temporary fix or if it will come back?  Anything else I can do for it at home?  Should I see a doctor?

And, yes, this post will probably get one-starred.  And, it probably deserves it :)  I'm just desperate for advice.

Re: Help...ingrown toenail from pedicure?

  • just keep cleaning it with alcohol and keep an eye on it -- further pain (or no pain) will give you your answer.

Whenever my nail gets cut too short like that, it's gross, but I have to sort of 'lift' the nail up and out a few times during the day and after a couple of days the nail grows and doesn't 'dig in'..did that make sense?

  • Keep it super clean, try lifting the nail with clean tweezers, and if you can, get a little piece of gauze under it until it grows out. It should only take a few days. You should also put neosporin on it. Dr scholls makes a few products for ingrown toenails - they smell terrible, but really work, especially if the pain comes back.
