How to use vinegar in a front loader

DH has this obsession with Downy fabric softener, and lots of it, but I've slowly been weaning him of it.  I'd like to try using vinegar in the wash, but I'm not sure how to do it in my front loader.  Do I put it in with the detergent?  In the fabric softener section?  The fabric softener goes in at the end though I think so would that make the clothes more likely to smell vinegary?  TIA!

I use unscent laundry detergent and wool dryer balls, and never smell vinegar on my clothes. I fill a downy ball with it and toss it in that's it. I would put it in the fabric softener selection.

I put it in the fabric softener section and never have had my clothes smell like vinegar.  Works great.

Thanks, ladies.  I'll just put it in the fabric softener section.  How much do you use - a half cup?
