gym membership...what would you do?

My mom decided as an early Christmas gift my folks would pay for a gym membership to a very nice gym for me. I work outside of the home full time so it is nice to have a way to relieve some of my stress and get into shape. I recently had a health scare which made me realize I need this. My DH is totally against me joining a gym. We do have equipment at home, an elliptical and weights. He is not being a jerk about it but just does not see the point. For me it is time away from home and just time by myself. I plan on going early morning or afterwork as well as on the weekend with my neighbors. Any thoughts?

  • I think it is a great idea.  You need to have time to yourself to do things for yourself, and a gym is a great outlet.  Sure, you could run at home for free but you can't participate in classes, meet new people and stretch and push yourself the way you might at a gym.

Your DH should support you in this.  Happy, healthy mom and wife equals happy, healthy family.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • He thinks it is a waste of money when we have equipment at home. He doesn't think I should need to go anywhere else. For me their is also a social element since I will be taking some classes with a few of my neighbor gals.
  • Wow you want to work out of the home AND join a gym --- but who will raise your kids!!?!? LOL

Honestly if I had work out equiptment at home I wouldn't join a gym BUT everybody is different- some people need getting out of the house or working out with friends as motivation. If you think you need that to be succesful then I absolutely think you should join the gym. As a mom, I struggle with finding the time to take care of myself too but I know that it is important to not only set a healthy example but also to try to stick around as long as possible!!!

Yes  I treasure my gym time; it's MINE. I don't like working out at home; I'm not as disciplined, and there is *always* something to do other than workout. This morning, I tried to do yoga. I had a naked pre-schooler rolling around under me, and DS crying to be fed. So much for a home workout.

And, he's not paying for it, so what does it matter?

  • I hated every gym I ever set foot in, until I joined the YMCA this past winter (at DH's insistence that he wanted to go, but he seldom goes).  They have childcare, which makes it very attractive to go.  They have a pool for the kids, which they love that can be used year round.  I am shocked by how much I like it.  We used to have equipment at home, but I could never use it because the treadmill was right over DD's room, and made too much noise when she was sleeping.  Using it when the kids were awake was not an option.  I also like the variety at the gym, the tvs, the other people, though I really don't hang out with people when I am there, I do run into people I know frequently.
  • I know DH is only being cautious about money but this is a gift (early Christmas present). I know I am super busy but I know I will make time to do this.
  • What would take me 1hr at the gym would take me a week at home. I hate working out at home, I love the gym.
  • I love going to the gym (I work there, but I love going at other times).  It's time just for me.  I do videos in the house occasionally, but since having kids, I just want to be somewhere else to work out.

I like taking classes and the other amenities that my gym offers.

    It's a GIFT.  It's a no-brainer.

If you don't end up liking it or using it, you can always fall back to the equipment at home.

  • I prefer to work out in a gym rather than in my house. I feel like its more motivating to get dressed and go to a gym and do it.  At home there are too many temptations like the couch right in front of me!
