Re: ??? Weekly Check-in ???
Yay Sandra, thanks for doing this
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 24 weeks tomorrow
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Jack can "crawl" - he skipped the army crawl stage and does something that resembles the worm dance move. (he always makes things so difficult on himself). He gets onto hands and knees, leans forward, goes down like the worm and then scoots his legs back under him. then repeat.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? nothing upcoming
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? trying to figure out what happens when I travel for work. 2 nights away in 2 weeks, and then 4 nights away next month and possibly 2-3 nights away sometime before Nov. I could probably bring my sister to a couple of those but Jack likes school so much (and we are paying for it!) so I just keep thinking it is probably best to leave him to his own routine with DH.
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites? I have really only read nutrition books and reference the dr. sears baby book here and there.
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music? Jack likes Jazz, it calmed him down when he was younger and seems to be his preferred car music. It is what plays on the off hours on our NPR station so it is what was on in my car when we drove home from the hospital - we have listened to it every since. He also likes cause and effect music type toys (xylephone, bells, rattles with bells). I bought a neat drum set at Target that includes those eggs you shake and some other instruments. He loves it. I think they have a baby/tot music class at the gym that starts in the Fall and we will sign up for that.
(7) Mamas: Re introducing solids (for both those doing and not doing BLW) - What foods are you feeding? What equipment do you like (high chair, splat mat, utensils, plates, etc.)? LOVE the Tripp Trapp high chair. BLW so we don't use utensils or plates at this point. He doesn't like sippy cups so I just let him drink out of a silicone (flexible) cupcake mold that I hold. A friend recommended the Tiny Diner but it doesn't stick to our painted wood table
so I just put the food on the table and immediately wipe up when he's done. We probably need a splat mat but so far I have just been wiping up immediately when he is done.
I already have a normal food storage glass container I will put his food for daycare in when that time comes. Once he is in the waddler (~1+) room they provide a healthy, local and organic when possible menu but there still may be days I want him to eat something different.
intently watching his dad eat to see if he can learn any good tips
Thanks for doing the check-in Sandra... I can't believe you are 24 weeks already! It seems like yesterday that I saw you in Seattle
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 36w4d, this means I'm next on the list, eep!!!
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Feeling... good. Can't really complain although my hips are starting to get sore and sleeping is a lot more difficult
Oh and I can sure feel him getting bigger and bigger.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Next appt. is on Tuesday next week, they are weekly now.
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? The sore hips, upper thigh area? That is fairly new this week.
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites? I have so many books but I haven't read any lately, I should though! I am going to start my mat leave early (next week I just work 1 day and I'm off for nearly 3 weeks) so I plan to do some reading then, I hope
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music? We are music lovers so I'm sure he's already introduced to it.I love Hawaii!
Tara & Ian . 4/24/2008 . The Kahala Planning . Married
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? feeling good still, but only sleeping ~7 hr a night, can't seem to sleep more =( i want more sleep! had our 24w appt earlier this week, baby was growing right on target
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? not for another 3 weeks - and then glucola! keeping my fingers crossed.
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? not much! eta: what was i thinking - TMI alert (again) - have a bit of yeast and a bit of bacteria down there
and stupid hemorrhoid is still SLOWLY going away. ugh. yuck x3.
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites? I haven't yet...really curious to see what everyone else says. i'm planning to get the dr sears book, as well as baby 411. also have some love and logic books, which make a lot of sense to me - but it will be years before we need them.
...i'm almost in my 3rd tri - 1st tri took forever, and 2nd tri is flying by - how did that happen? now busy moving in (with a deadline - houseguests labor day weekend) - so i don't feel like i have much time for BR reading these days
i want to read about labor and childbirth techniques too (in addition to the classes we'll be taking). eeps. stressing myself out.
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music? i imagine we'll use musical toys. neither MH nor I are very musical, though we both played instruments growing up. most of my music-listening (or rather, NPR-listening) happens in the car. we don't have a way to play music at home right now, aside from our ipods or computers...so yeah...not sure. i do think it's important though!
(7) Mamas: Re introducing solids (for both those doing and not doing BLW) - What foods are you feeding? What equipment do you like (high chair, splat mat, utensils, plates, etc.)? Robbi - LOVE the photo of Jack in his tripp trapp - that is the best advertisement for that chair ever, hah.
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
He is 8 mon, 3 wks, 6 days, lol..... 9 months on Monday.
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? pulling to stand regularly, crawling using his knees now (not just commando style), likes grapes (but I now know why they say to peel the skins!)
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? 9 month checkup - shots and I hear rumors about bloodwork?
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? separation anxiety - my parents were here over the weekend and he wouldn't go to them much if at all
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites? I have Baby411, but it's not too much on child rearing.
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music? He hears it on TV (LOVES certain theme songs), and we play music for him in the car and during bathtime. I'm thinking of making a bedtime CD for him as well.
(7) Mamas: Re introducing solids (for both those doing and not doing BLW) - What foods are you feeding? What equipment do you like (high chair, splat mat, utensils, plates, etc.)? We had a hand-me-down high chair which works fine, not my first choice, but we had the room, so that's ok. Munchkin bowls, Nuby & Gerber spoons, haven't used placemats yet - just high chair tray. If you're going with something messy/watery, I'd say use one of the plastic bibs rather than the absorbant ones (those just absorb AND go onto the clothes underneath). We are on stage 3 foods now - some have chunks in them and some do not - weird. Anyway, he gets some table food as well - sweet potatoes, grapes, bananas, green beans, ground beef, puffs, cheerios, wagon wheels, watermelon, honeydew melon, mashed potatoes, pasta.
this sounds ridiculously cute!!!
Post updated due dates or gender reports here.
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 9 weeks
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? this is a little TMI but my hoo haa still doesnt feel the same...i still have pains and burning
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? he starts shots tomorrow
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? he has not pooped since monday
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites? nope i just wing it
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music? he always have it playing and he has a few toys that play music
(7) Mamas: Re introducing solids (for both those doing and not doing BLW) - What foods are you feeding? What equipment do you like (high chair, splat mat, utensils, plates, etc.)? haven't made it to this stage yet
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
Elyse is 7 and a half months old. I'm sure you can all relate, but the last 7.5 months have gone by so incredibly fast. It makes me sad and excited all at the same time to think about how quickly she's growing.
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
Elyse has started crawling. Sometimes she'll crawl other times she'll wriggle around. She likes getting off the rug onto the hardwood and tile because she can go faster.
She also got her first cold while we were away, she got over the worst of it within a few days.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
None to report
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?
I'm having a challenging week in regards to going back to work and that I will probably have to wean E off breast milk in October. I've been thinking about it so much, I'll try to write a post when I'm not so emotional and overwhelmed about it.
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites?
We haven't been reading because she's not a snuggler. She doesn't like to sit on either of us. I lay beside her on my bed or lean over the crib and sing to her though. She likes hearing my voice.
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music?
I have music on all the time. She doesn't appear to like any particular type, but I mostly listen to country and top 40. She does really like the music on her baby toys. If I sing any of the songs away from the toys she appears to recognize it.
(7) Mamas: Re introducing solids (for both those doing and not doing BLW) - What foods are you feeding? What equipment do you like (high chair, splat mat, utensils, plates, etc.)?
We have a highchair, bowls and bibs. We're not doing BLW, she doesn't like the texture of foods that aren't pureed really well. Now she's eating: sweet potatoe, squash, peas, green beans, pears, bananas. We're going a bit slower because when she's teething she will refuse to eat anything but oat cereal.
Married Bio
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 15 weeks and 2 days
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? We had the first real tear - like an actual tear rolling down a cheek. Dash got really mad about something and started howling and crying and there it was!
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? A minor checkup next week to get them weighed and measured - that's about it.
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? Mmm...dealing with MIL, if that counts. I think she thinks I'm trying to keep her from seeing the boys (for no good reason, just because she tends to leap to ridiculous conclusions based on virtually nothing).
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites? I actually haven't read a single one! We're kind of winging it lol.
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music? I make up little songs to sing to them all day (nothing major just silly rhymes about whatever we're doing at the moment - it's pretty nerdy lol!), and they have toys that make music. They both also REALLY like Lady Gaga, which is pretty funny!
(7) Mamas: Re introducing solids (for both those doing and not doing BLW) - What foods are you feeding? What equipment do you like (high chair, splat mat, utensils, plates, etc.)? n/a yet
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
He is 2 weeks old today!
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? I'm doing okay. I still having trouble with the whole breastfeeding thing. It's getting better, and we're still doing some nursing, followed by a couple of ounces of formula. I'm okay with that, especially since he gained 3.5 ounces this week....yay! But I'm second-guessing myself now. Honestly, I have found bottle-feeding to be so much easier, and though I definitely still want to work on the breastfeeding for while yet, I'm confused. I know "breast is best," but it's still stressing me out so much that I have to wonder if it's best for us.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Henry has an appt. next Wed. for another weight check, and I go in tomorrow morning for my two-week incision check. If all goes well, I can drive again (not that I have anywhere to go!)
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? The whole BF thing, definitely!
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites? I'm currently trying to finish "Secrets of the Baby Whisperer," which I had started before H came.
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music? We have the entire series of the "Rockabye Baby" CDs, and I also have made some playlists for both playtime and sleepytime. Henry actually has his own iPod (crazy, I know, but it's just an old one we don't use anymore, and we got a great deal on clearance speakers for it at Target....cheaper than a CD player!). I have only played him music on it once so far (earlier today, actually), but I do sing to him all the time. I'd like to find a mommy and me music class, but most of them around here are during the day, and I'm going back to work in October. Oh well.....I guess being a music teacher I might be able to manage to teach him a few things myself!
(7) Mamas: Re introducing solids (for both those doing and not doing BLW) - What foods are you feeding? What equipment do you like (high chair, splat mat, utensils, plates, etc.)? n/a yet, but we do have a high chair and some Munchkin bowls and spoons that we got as gifts.
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
2.5 months
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
Pretty good. My work extended my leave until Jan! I'm pretty happy about that =P
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
4 month check-up
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?
Getting back on his original sleeping schedule (he was doing 6hrs/night) after we went out of town last week. It always gets messed up when we travel, but he always recovers within a few days but it's been a week and he's still waking up every 3 hours =(
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites?
I'm such a lazy reader. I skimmed through a chapter of the Baby Whisperer book and a chapter of What to Expect the 1st Year. We're trying to follow the EASY routine from Baby Whisperer.
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music?
Playing or listening? I listen to pretty much everything except country and oldies. But I tend to listen to more trance/classical/new age/soundtrack music when I'm with LO, just because I figure they're more PG
I did buy two toys already that play classical music: Little Super Star Classical Stacker and Take Along Tunes. My favorite genre is R&B/hip-hop/pop/alternative rock but I don't like exposing LO to too much explicit lyrics so I try to get "clean" versions of the songs. As for playing, MH is the musical one, so I'm going to leave it up to him on that one
Hmmm.... reading comprehension = FAIL! Sorry
I read the Baby Whisperer and found that Elyse really naturally fit into the EASY routine. Other than that I'm going with my gut and advice from friends.
Married Bio
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 35 weeks yesterday
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? feeling good...my bones still hurt, but seriously no real complaints.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? two weeks & then I start going every week
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? not really a challenge, but more of a realization...my dr said after the next two weeks pass, she won't stop my labor (after 37 weeks) if I were to go into labor. The idea of having a baby in two weeks is just unbelievable to me. She also said that if I make it to my due date (9/9), she would schedule an induction for 9/13 or 14. Lots of unknowns, but crazy how close it is all getting!!!
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites? no, but I want to! I have tried to read the postpartum chapters in my pregnancy books, but I need to get a few books on what to so beyond pg!
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music? I am not sure...probably not a formal introduction. Just baby listening to what we listen to.
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
6 months and 2 weeks old...
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
Libby has learned to snort and it cracks her up. So lately we hear "snort, snort...tee hee hee..." It's too cute! She's mastering rolling onto all fours from a sitting position and is figuring out how to crawl...she gets frustrated easily though. She's also babbling like crazy and added in consonants...sometimes we think we hear "mama" and "dada'...usually when she is upset or wants something. She understands a lot...we've been signing to her things like "milk" "more" "potty" "bath" "mom" "dad" and she reacts appropriately to them (we always say the words when we do the signs)...I hope she'll start signing soon.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
Her 6 month pedi appt. is Monday, my annual exam with my OB/GYN is Wednesday.
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?
She's been wakeful (again) I think due to developmental strides. Three nights in a row she was up from 2-4 a.m.! Last two nights she's slept right through. So weird.
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites?
I have read a few...mostly related to BFing, Sleep, etc. I actually prefer to Google whatever it is I am interested in and research info. that way...I like www.askdrsears.com, www.babycenter.com, www.babyledweaning.com
I plan to check "Love and Logic" out of the library.
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music?
I started in the womb...I sang all the time. DH and I are both professional musicians so its important to us that our kids appreciate music (and study it, even if only as a hobby). We sing to her daily and DH also plays the flute for her at times. I'll sit with her at the piano (with her facing forward in the DIY Moby) and play and sing and let her play on the piano. We also got her a Baby Einstein Piano (5 notes) that she loves! It plays Mozart. She also LOVES her Soothing Sounds Seahorse (FP) which plays some Classical tunes and standard lullabies. Finally, we always have music on in the house...sometimes classical, sometimes rock and roll, or R&B, but it's always playing and she seems to enjoy it. I hope to enroll her in a Kindermusik or Music Together class this Fall.
(7) Mamas: Re introducing solids (for both those doing and not doing BLW) - What foods are you feeding? What equipment do you like (high chair, splat mat, utensils, plates, etc.)?
We're using a Keekaroo Height Right Chair. I got a Boon plate that is hard for her to move off the tray (although she tries) and Boon untensils (we sometimes load the spoon with mushier foods for her to feed herself). No splat mat (not needed...yet...our dogs get anything that hits the floor!)...
We're feeding organic foods...mainly roasted, sauteed, grilled and steamed veggies (sweet potato, carrot, broccoli, green beans, asparagus, summer squash, zucchini) and raw fruit (nectarines, peaches, plums, avocado), apple sauce (no sugar added), multigrain toast, oatmeal, rice crackers (Mum Mums), puffs (Happy Baby), plain yogurt, scrambled egg yolks, turkey meatballs, grilled pork chop...
We're doing BLW so I cut things into about 2-3" "sticks" for her to handle or we load mushier things onto the spoon for her to put in her mouth. So far she's doing a lot of tasting and experimenting and not a lot of actual consuming...but there is some evidence in her diaper that a few things are going down. She LOVES sweet potato "fries" (baked in a touch of EVOO) and steamed broccoli. She also drinks from a "cup" (the top of one of her many rejected bottles). My mom got her a sippy cup (Muchkin brand) which we give her with water...she mainly just chews on the tip...I think it feels good on her gums since she's teething (still).
(8) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?
TTCers: Which cycle are you on? Where in the cycle are you? What, if anything, are you doing/trying for TTC success?
TTC/PG Blog | Mommy Blog
thanks sandra!!! and wow. my first weekly update! i'm gonna cut and paste these, print them out, and put them in my p-journal
and yay! i'm on the due date list!
Post updated due dates or gender reports here.
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 8w5d
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? i feel like crap. my m/s is better after taking the zofran. i felt a bit guilty at first for medicating, but then i felt like, well, it's either that or i don't eat. at. all. so medicating it is. last night i looked in the mirror and i saw my veins for the first time. and i felt like i needed to join professor x's school for the gifted. or become an avatar. hahaha but yeah, pg symptoms? i feel like i've got them all.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
9/27 and i'll be 11 weeks
and hopefully the end of this 1st tri well come quickly!
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?
drinking water. drinking anything. waking up.
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites?
reading what to expect while you're expecting. last night i read the labor and delivery part. and i thought i was going to throw up. haha i have a newfound respect for mommies, and obgyn doctors/medical staff.
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music?
i sing.
and i play music all the time. all kinds.
(8) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?
hawaii 10.2008 plan ;P married bio ???
i'm lame. 8/27 is my next appt. apparently lc is sucking my brain cells too.
hahahahah
we already saw lucky charms during my last appt last week. and we cried and were so happy. lc has a good heartbeat
hawaii 10.2008 plan ;P married bio ???
Bella just turned one and I wrote a big post on breastfeeding in my blog if you are interested... We made it our goal but I'm still emotional and overwhelmed about it!
We tried the munchkin brand and they leaked like crazy for us, maybe it was just the one we got and hopefully they don't leak for you!
1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? Bella is one year!! I'm 8 weeks pregnant.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Bella has her one year on the 16th and I have another appt on the 23rd.
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? Being pregnant and having a one year old!! I don't know how people do it! Seriously I am exhausted, add that to the combination that I feel like I could puke every second of the day= TOUGH!! I want 3-4 kids but how on the earth do mom's do it??
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites? I haven't read any lately, other than the Vaccine book. We did a semi-modified vaccination schedule so I'm still trying to figure out what to give her at the one year appt... Our doctor normally does Prevnar and Hep A but I'm thinking of doing the prevnar (to complete her series) but wait until 15 months or later to do the hep a... any thoughts? (6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music? i iWe're big time music lovers so she's been introduced from that minute she was conceived. We listen to tons of music and made up silly songs to each other and now we just add her in the mix... someday she'll realize how crazy we are
(7) Mamas: Re introducing solids (for both those doing and not doing BLW) - What foods are you feeding? What equipment do you like (high chair, splat mat, utensils, plates, etc.)? For starting out we started with rice cereal which was NO good, she got SO constipated and we ended up having to give her a suppository (prune juice, plums and pears didn't work!). Then we went to oatmeal cereal which was much better then veggies then fruits. We made all of our purees and just changed the textures as she changed. I think making baby food is the best way to go, it's cheap, it's easy, it's organic (if that's what you chose, we did) and it's nice to know exactly what the baby's getting. I honestly can't believe more people don't do it just based on how easy it is and how cheap it is! We spent a couple of hours on a saturday making food for the next 2 weeks. Now she pretty much eats exactly what we eat. We have a Chicco highchair that I really wanted because so many of my friends had them and raved about them... well I HATE it! It's a pita to clean! It's a great chair but the cleaning part is a big deal since she's eating 3 meals a day and 2-3 snacks a day too, that's a ton of cleaning for something that isn't exactly easy to clean! We got a bunch of gerber spoons and a few others that we got as gifts so we use whatever's available and clean. I personally don't have a preference for any particular spoon but will say that the gerber spoons were the best when she was just starting out because the actual spoon part is a nice shape and it's soft. Bella has been taking a sippy off and on since she was 6 months old and really got the hang of it around 8-10 months. Now she's going through a lazy bum phase though and she wants someone else to hold it! We started out with Nuby ones because I was at BRU at a mom suggested them. We like them OK but the "nipple" area that they drink from is hard to clean because of all of the little divets on the underside. They also cave in when she sucks hard on them. I end up soaking the nipple part to get the old milk out of it. I also did a trial for the Born Free ones and Bella wouldn't drink out of them at all, she plain refused them so it's a good thing that it was a trial and I didn't spend the $10 that it cost! We also have the munchkin ones but as I mentioned to Lori, they leak a ton! DH and I have both tried to see if it's user error but it doesn't seem to be. We have some plates but haven't used any yet, we just put her food on her high chair tray which works fine. We don't have a splat mat but I can see how it might be useful. Bella used to be really bad about tossing things over the side that she didn't like or want. Now she just pushes them out of her way.
Q: Did you DH get any time off after the baby came? How do you ask for help from friends to come by while you DH is at work?
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
she'll be 9 months old on Thurs!
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
no new milestones this week... though she is starting to sleep a lot better now that we've moved her bedtime earlier. she now goes to sleep between 7:30-8pm and will sleep until 5:30am. at 5:30 she'll eat and then usually go back to sleep at 6am until about 7:30-8 before getting up for the day. i think it's wonderful that she is sleeping 9-10 hrs straight now, but unfortunately I don't go to bed at 8pm so i end up getting only 5-6 hours of sleep before she gets up
I know that some babies can go 12 hrs w/o eating but i am extremely hesitant to try putting her back to sleep at 5:30am w/o feeding her b/c i feel like I am personally hungry sometimes after 10 hrs so why should I think she isn't hungry??? it is just really hard on me, though, b/c i don't always fall back asleep after she goes back down around 6am...fine if i am home for the day but tough if i am working that day.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
she'll go in on aug 18 for her 9 month appt
(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?
she's been having trouble napping. i can't figure out if it's due to separation anxiety, or b/c she is trying to drop down from 2 naps to 1 nap (which i know usually happens later for most babies). sometimes she is an angel and just goes to sleep after i put her down and then other times she starts wailing and nothing i do will console her, including singing to her, rocking her, holding her, etc. i just have to lay her down (sometimes she is pushing me away when i pick her up even) and rub/pat her back/chest until she finally calms down and goes to sleep...sometimes this takes an hour!!
(5) Have/are you reading any books on child rearing? If so, what are some of your favorites?
not really. i'm so lazy! my friend gave me what to expect the 1st year but i never got around to reading it...should have read it when i was PG. i do read resources online like dr. sears and babycenter though.
(6) How did/will you introduce your LO to music?
she was introduced to some music en utero but not a lot. since being born though she gets sung to a lot and we play music for her in the car. at home, she has a nursery rhyme book that is sing along that we play for her...but really we find that she loves hearing US sing to her the most! when we sing a tune she really likes, she will grin, start "dancing," moving her body and head back and forth, it is really cute.
(7) Mamas: Re introducing solids (for both those doing and not doing BLW) - What foods are you feeding? What equipment do you like (high chair, splat mat, utensils, plates, etc.)?
we have the svan high chair (no cushion) and so far i like it. the tray is easy to use/clean and i like that it's dishwasher safe (even though i always rinse it off by hand LOL)
i'd like to get a splat mat but we don't have one yet. right now i just let the dog "clean up" after her but when she gets older i'll start locking the dog up during feeding time b/c i don't want her to learn to "feed" the dog that way.
we use the take and toss spoons which seem to work just fine. i like that i was able to get a ton of them for just $3
we have some gerber bowls i got on clearance at 50% off but we also use small tupperware containers. i never got her used to eating warm food so i always feed her stuff staight out of the fridge so i don't have to worry about heating foods in plastic containers. we don't have any plates yet. if she is having something that she is going to eat herself, i just put it straight onto the tray
for foods, she's had several different veggies (squash, peas, carrots, beets, green beans, broccoflower, zucchini, corn) and we are getting into a lot of fruits now (cantaloupe, prunes, watermelon, pineapple, avocado, banana). with all of the fruits i just cut them up into small pieces and she is good about "chewing" them and eating them. i've put pieces on her tray for her and she will play w/the food mostly. she will sometimes try to get some into her mouth but i don't think she has the motor skills just yet to get squishy things like banana and avocado into her mouth b/c they kind of squish out between her fingers as she brings her hand to her mouth.
it's interesting b/c i started her on acorn squash and she grimaced, gagged, and vomited....i thought she didn't like it. so we moved on to other veggies...and then a few weeks later i gave it to her again (i didn't want to waste it since i cooked a whole squash so i just froze it) and she loved it! out of all the things we've given her, she has yet to eat something and not like it!
i really think making your own baby food is easy. whenever we make a trip to the grocery store i just pick out one new thing for her to try and also something that doesn't require any prep (i.e. banana, avocado, etc) most things i prepare as soon as we get home from the store. i just chop it up, steam it, and then throw it into our mini food processor. usually one vegetable is enough for me to make several servings to get her through a few days, and then if i have some extra i'll freeze it in an ice cube tray and then toss the cubes in a ziploc baggy. but, i don't make a bunch to freeze (like i thought i would before she started solids) just b/c it's so quick/easy to make something fresh and i'd prefer to feed her fresh food instead of frozen. i do find, however, that having the small stash of frozen food is nice for when i haven't had a chance to make her next batch of food yet and i'm too lazy to do it that night
we've only had one bout of constipation since she started solids and ever since then i've starting giving her about 1 tbsp of pureed prunes each day to make sure she stays regular
i don't know if it's really necessary but it was soooo hard to see her crying while she was on the potty that i just don't want her to have to go through that again!
oh and for water i just let her drink out of the lid to one of the avent bottles we have. it's a good size and seems to work well. it's messy though so i just bought a nuby cup w/straw to teach her how to drink out of a spill proof container. she got a few good sips out of it today but mostly just chewed on it since she is teething. i'm hoping that with some practice/experience, she'll learn that it's for drinking, not teething
