Houston Babies

C-Section Moms....question for ya.

I had a C-Section with my daughter on October 24, 2007.  Everything was fine, but a week after we were home a part of my incision opend up.  Nothing big, maybe the side of your thumb nail, but it was a huge hassel.  I had home healthcare come out twice a day to clean and pack it (husband tried to do it, but he was afraid to hurt me) and I had to see my OB/Gyn every week to check on the healing.

Well, recently a friend of mine had a C-Section and her incision opened up about two weeks after getting home....at the time I didn't know this, but she went to the same OB/Gyn as I did.

Now DH and I are thinking about having another baby, but my only concern is regarding the incision and opening again.  Was my friend and mine incision opening up, being done by the same doc, just a weird fluke?  Does it happen often?  Or should I REALLY consider seeing another doc?

Thanks for reading and your info is really appreciated.

Re: C-Section Moms....question for ya.

  • I've had 2 c-sections and the incision never re-opened.  I know quite a few other moms with c-sections and never heard of the incision re-opening...so if I were you I would consider seeing another doc.  unless maybe you and your friend drove or did some strenuous lifting that caused it to re-open!  GL

  • Trust yourself to know the right decision to make. In my opinion, if you are thinking about switching, I would do it. Of course that's coming from someone who switched OBs for my second pregnancy. I had a gut feeling that it was something I needed to do. So far I have been pleased with the change.

For what it's worth, I had a c-section and did not have any problems with the incision.

  • The 1st time, my incision opened but I didn't have to do anything like home health care or pack it. My OB literally lined the skin back up and taped it together. In my case, the skin was not healing flush, it was overlapping and that was why it wouldn't stay closed.

With my 2nd c-sec, the doc used Dermabond rather than stitches. It never opened and the dermabond helped the whole healing process go much easier.

  • I'd find another Dr.  I'm sure sometimes it's a weird fluke but there is such a thing as surgical skill and not all Dr.s are equally skilled.

My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

  • Unless you've got a whole lot of love for this OB, I'd switch. I don't think it's *that* common and knowing someone else that had it happen would push me over the edge to switching.

In my case... this wouldn't matter.  My OB was not the one who did the final stitching up.

  • I've had 2 c-sections as well and didn't have issues. I agree that having it happen to both you and your friend seems a bit concerning. I think if your gut is telling you to use someone else then you someone else. If you stay with the same doctor you might not be able to shake that thought from lingering in the back of your mind throughout the rest of your pregnancy and delivery.
  • If I were feeling unsure, I would switch.

I had a c-section three weeks ago, and I've had no problems at all. It's healing up very well.

  • I had a c-section in 2006 and didn't have any problems.  I was concerned after leaving the hospital after 3 days without staples or actual stitches, (they took them out first), but I had about 25 of those surgical steri strips on that didn't come off for what seemed like forever.  I would see another doctor, this person seems like maybe they missed a stitch or something.  Seems like to many issues with this doc, especially since you and your girl friend had complications.  Good luck!
  • Thanks, ya'll.

I think I was swaying towards changing OB/Gyn's but the advice and suggestions ya'll gave definitely made up my mind.

Now....I gotta find me another OB/Gyn.  I would love to see an associate in her practice who does VBACs but she's not accepting new patients unless referred by another patient or by another physician.

    Thanks again!

  • I had two and neither opened. My friend, who goes to my doc, had her incision open up after her first c-section.

So, in our case, same doc, different stories.

I think it is pretty common. Sorry to hear it happened to you two.

  • I had my son in 2007 and a day after I came home from the hospital my wound was leaking....as stupid as it sounds I didn't even realize it, I just thought I was sweating (from the hormones, medication, etc.).  I was told to come to the OB's office where they proceed to re-open my wound, drain it and pack it.  The next day Home Health Care came and everyday after for the next 3 months.  I have several friends who love, love, love, this doc....and a local Nestie (who I don't know personally) who just had this same doc deliver her baby and who also seem to love her. But after my experience I just didn't feel the "love".  There were several other reasons for me switching doctors and I am so glad I did. I found another doctor willing to do a VBAC but my DD was breach so another c-section was in order.  I cannot tell you how afraid I was that I was going to go through that mess again.  But wow. what a difference!!!  I was up and walking around within a few days and at my son's soccer practice in less than 2 weeks.

I totally understand your fear, I mean the wounds opening could be a fluke but, just the lack of confidence you have in your OB is reason enough to switch in my book.
