What can I use as a swim diaper?

We're headed to the in-law's this weekend and are hoping to get LO to the pool.  I don't know if we'll go in the water but, just in case, I'm wondering what I can use for a swim diaper.  LO is tiny (9 lbs.) and the disposable diapers all start at 16 lbs.  Are there any brands that are smaller?  Or a non-disposable?  Or are we just SOL?

  • We bought a swim diaper (reusable) at BRU but I don't know if they would have any left. When all else fails, skinny dip! :)

  • We have the small swim diapers and they fit DS fine.  He is a chunky little guy now but he started wearing them when he weighed about 11 lbs.  They are made pretty small and have elastic.  You might just give them a try if they are too big you can always save the rest for next year.

  • Yes, I agree with PP.  We used them for our LO when he was only 10 weeks, and was 11 lbs and they said they were for 16 + lbs we folded them and they were fine! Have fun!

Oh, that's good to know!  Thank you!

  • Look up reuseable diaper/swimsuits. Otherwise I agree some swimmers are good and small.

  • It appears that your LO is wearing a CD in your sig, yes?  In a pinch, you can use a cover.  I wouldn't make a habit of it, as the PUL can be irritating and the chlorine can destroy it.  But they work pretty well when necessary.

Yeah, we CD and I meant to order a reuseable swim diaper, but ran out of time.  I plan on getting one for later trips, though.

So, do you mean just a cover?  Or would I put something under it?

  • You can use just a cover, nothing under it. But as the PP said, it may not be comfortable to have the PUL right against the skin. All swim diapers are only meant to keep poop in, not pee, so the cover alone will do that. For future reference (or if you have a store near you...) Bummis makes an excellent swim diaper that comes in sizes down to 6 pounds. We have it and love it.

I have a Bummis swim diaper, too, and I like it.  I also bought an Imse Vimse one, but the leg openings were too large for my DD.  The I-V isn't adjustable for the leg holes, but the Bummis brand is.

Thanks for the recommendations!  I'm going to order one today. :)
