does anyone have a rug from Ikea?

We're slowly transforming part of our house into a play area for the boys, and I have my eye on this 100% wool rug from Ikea:

But the mofo is $499 (vs $249 for the same thing in the USA - like everything else, rugs are $$$ down under!) and I'd have to make a special trip to Sydney to buy it so I want to know if they're decent or if I should look elsewhere.

It doesn't have to be the best of the best of the best (and I don't mind stuff from Ikea) but if it's going to fall apart quickly I'd rather get something else. Smile

Re: does anyone have a rug from Ikea?

  • we have a cheapo rug from ikea - i doubt it's 100% wool (sorry, can't check right now - it's still at our old house).  it's not very soft either - not something i'd want my kids crawling on Stick out tongue  so...i'm not much help.  i think it's probably decent though?

one option we're looking at (b/c yes, rugs are expensive!) is finding cool remnant carpet, and spending a few hundred dollars (it's something like $2.50 per linear foot) to bind it into a rug.  ...but you probably wouldn't find stuff as colorful and fun as the rug you've picked out.

I actually had the same thought about remnant carpet, but they don't seem to sell it here like they do in the USA. Sad

I really like that Ikea rug because it's 100% wool and most of the colorful rugs I can find are synthetic blends (most of the other Ikea rugs are too). It's just so freaking expensive! It would fit PERFECTLY in the space we're planning to use though...

  • Yeah, I'm always shocked at how much rugs cost in general.  We got a soft light blue rug for Henry's room, and it was $349.  But it's sooooo soft, and matched the color scheme perfectly, and I couldn't resist!

Anyway, I used to have a nice sisal area rug from Ikea until it was stolen from my storage unit (long story!).  Anyway, I loved it.  It was great quality, and held up nicely over the years.  I don't know how that'd compare to your wool one, though.

  • I think I have looked at that run in person.  I as thinking it would be nice in the basement play area.  It was really thick (good!) but a little scratchy (bad) but I would still buy it for the price and seemingly good quality.  One thing to think about (I think Lori just mentioned it) is how easy it is to clean - does it say anything about that?

MIL bought us a CHEAP ikea rug when she was here b/c she was shocked that we didn't have a rug in the nursery.  blah - at that age Jack played on quilts.  I rolled it up and have put it in the basement.  It has a road/city design so I figure I will just unroll it when Jack is interested in cars.

I'm not sure about the cleaning...all it says is "Pure new wool makes the rug naturally soil-repellent and durable." Oh wait, it also says "professional carpet cleaning when needed." So I suppose that normally I'd vacuum it, then just get it cleaned when we get the carpets cleaned 2-3 times a year?

  • Don't have an IKEA rug but did get an expensive rug for Libby's nursery that we're no longer using because it's impossible to clean and keep clean.  Opted for the foam tiles you see in my siggy pic...$24 for 6 - 24" square tiles...we got two sets...LOVE THEM!  She does too...especially now that she's learning to crawl.  Bought them here: www.getrung.com
