Scarlet Fever

So I just got home from the grocery store to receive a call from my MIL saying that my husband's nephew has scarlet fever.  She said "I don't think it has any impact on pregnant women, but you might want to look into it."  I was around his nephew all weekend.  Anyone have experience with this?  Should I be concerned?

 Off to google I suppose...

Re: Scarlet Fever

  • I had heard it was contagious so if you get any symptoms you should call your OB.

  • I just read this....

Scarlet Fever is contagious for at least 10 to 21 days after infection and anyone infected should be quarantined for that period of time if untreated. If your child has scarlet fever and is given antibiotics, he or she should wait at least 24 hours before being around others.

  • You should call your OB and ask.  Please let us know how it goes.  Hope that everything is fine.

  • I definitely wouldn't panic, but I definitely would call your ob tomorrow and ask about it.
  • It's strep with a rash. My daughter had it once. Just watch out for sore throat and fever.
  • Google is your best bet I guess... I have no idea with Scarlet Fever. Sorry
  • Both my sons had this about 2 months ago. It is from strep throat, neither of them even showed or said they had a sore throat. The advice given to me by the ER Doc was not to be holding them (yeah right) or being overly close for a few days. So if your nephew was there and you didn't have him in your arms holding him, you should be fine. Also if you get a fever, sore throat, or unexplained rash call your OB!
  • It's really just strep - DD has had it before.  Neither DH nor I caught it when she had it.  The rash can be pretty miserable but isn't dangerous in and of itself.  That being said, if you start to develop a fever, sore throat and/or rash you should definitely call your doctor to get swabbed and get antibiotics.  Untreated strep can lead to other more serious complications.

  • Thanks for the replies, ladies.  I am going to call my Doctor first thing tomorrow.  I don't have any signs or symptoms right now, so I'm sure I'm fine, but better to ask the Doc about it to be safe.

  • I would think (I mean, I'm no doctor or anything) that the problem with scarlet fever and pregnant women would be the dangerously high fever that comes with it. 104-107 degree fever could be really bad for your baby. I agree with PP's, call the doc.
