Another Quick Question Regarding Adoption

Hello, ladies. Thanks so much for your responses to my last post, it turns out that having a history of clinical depression does present a problem when trying to adopt from international agencies. My DH and I are looking for some good domestic agencies to contact. Does anyone have any suggestions of agencies that we might contact? If you know of any good domestic agencies (particularly where a history of well-managed clinical depression won't be a problem) please let me know. Thanks so much!

I don't think a well-managed history of depression will be an obstacle for you in the US domestic adoption arena at all.  I have heard it being a major issue with international, as well as other health issues that are easily managed here in the US, but maybe not well understood in the international arena.  Bascially the US homestudy involves ensuring you are healthy enough to raise a child and that you have a "normal" life expentancy.

I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and have been on medication for a few years. I really anticipated it being an issue, but the only thing I had to do was get my doctor to sign my physical stating that I am fit to parent and it's under control. From what I read and heard, that is pretty typical of domestic adoption.

I don't know about the depression part but I had my homestudies through Adoptions Together in Silver Spring.  I was very pleased with them and have heard that they have a good reputation.  All my info is about 8 yrs old though.  Good Luck!
