We've been to many 3rd birthday parties in the past year. For non-bounce house entertainment, we've seen puppet shows, petting zoos, pony rides, amusement park rides (think Happy Hallow), trackless train rides, swimming, pinatas, and a visit from local firemen with their firetruck. And you can always do a fun craft in whatever theme your party is! At VBS, sand art was a huge hit.

WOW!
I know in Texas they really do go BIG. The train one was the coolest!
Sorry, didn't mean to sound snobby. :-) Just giving out ideas. Everything is cheaper out here, so none of those ideas cost as much as they might sound. My SIL paid $99 for a petting zoo at her DD's 3rd party which I don't think is that much (compared to paying hundreds to rent out an indoor party place).

I love it, I think I would feel "normal" in Texas You didn't sound snobby at all.
Not sure if there's something like this in your area but we're planning on doing a gymnastics bus when M is older. It's for 3 and up. It looks like lots of fun!
Re: Entertainment at a birthday party for 3 year old..
Maybe a little arts & crafts? Bubbles/bubble machine?
ETA: Face painting, decorate goodies, scavenger hunt?
We did crafts at Ryan's 3rd bday: String a necklace (I used fruit loops), door hangers with stickers, and pin the tail on the donkey-type game.

I am pretty simple and think of cheap oldschool stuff...
water balloon toss....baby pool to splash in...pin the tail on the donkey...and if I am getting fancy then a pinata!
