At about 10AM two little girls came into my office saying they weren't feeling good. They go on to tell me that they both had thrown up in the recent days. So I sit them down on the couch and take the first girl's temp- normal. Then I move onto the second one, thinking at this point that they are just being dramatic because it's hot today... as I watch her temp go higher, and higher, and higher... 101.7!
Right away I picked up the phone and started calling her parents and emergency contacts. I call and call and call- no answer. None. 6 numbers, work, home, cell, emergency contact... no one answers. So while I wait for someone to call me back the one with the fever goes on to tell me how she's thrown up every night and morning for the past 2 days and how she's had a sore throat since yesterday but her Dad said she needed to go to camp even though she felt sick.
WTF kind of parent has a kid THROWING UP and complaining of a sore throat and then sends them to summer camp!? FINALLY I got someone to come get her and by the time her ride arrived (an hour and a half later) her fever was 102.5. I don't get how parents can do that! There is no way she just suddenly got sick here at camp. She said she's felt sick since MONDAY and her parents have ignored it. Your kid is PUKING, how do you just ignore that!?!?!?!
I think the case here was neither parent wanted to take off of work so they just sent their kid to camp. I don't have a problem with working parents at all, but when your job doesn't have the flexibility to stay home with your sick child maybe a different job needs to be considered or hire someone who can help you out. Don't stick them with us and the 49 other kids here this week and expect us to just go with it.
PS- This is kid #2 to leave here with Strep Throat like symptoms. I got an update from the first one's Mom saying they were still waiting for the test results but the doctor was sure it was Strep. Happy happy, joy joy. Is it Saturday yet?
Re: Now I REALLY Don't Like Some Parents!
I deal with these kind of parents on a daily basis at school. It is so sad. I could not send Landon to school sick and much less not have a phone number that works so someone could contact me.
I had a little boy in Kindergarten a couple of years ago that fell and broke his arm on the playground. Tried every number we had, even went to his house. Another teacher had to ride with him to the hospital in the ambulance. Sorry sorry parents!
