Question About Macaronni Salad

I knew about not eating lunch meat and fish but didnt realize about eating macaronni salad until after I ate my lunch today.  I had store bought macaronni salad.  Are any of you eating this? I just wanted to see how you all felt about this so that I do not drive myself crazy thinking about it.  It really can get very consuming trying to figure out what I can and can not eat! Btw, I am 9 weeks today.  Thanks for your input and help!

  • I didn't know it was off limits?

Lunch meat can be eaten - they say you should heat it up until it's steaming but I have eaten a few cold ham & cheese sandwiches.  You can also eat fish - just watch the high mercury ones.  (Swordfish and Tuna for example)  Fish are good for your diet!

  • I haven't heard anything about macaroni salad.....???

This exactly.  Taking fish out of your diet is not good for you either.

  • I heard something about the Mayo in Macaronni Salad being a problem and the macaronni salad sometimes containing raw eggs and being more susceptible to containing bacteria like listeria, salmonella, etc.

It is reassuring to hear that this food doesnt seem like a huge threat! I wanted to hear all of your input to see if you have heard about this or not.  I am going to consider that this food may not be that much a risk.  I think some of these websites might overreact about what you can and can not eat considering many women did not watch what they ate, etc and ended up having healthy babies.

It is sometimes easy to get caught up in the game of worrying--good luck to everyone!

No...I just goggled it and they say it may contain listeria - same as lunch meat, lettuce ect ect.  I say if it comes from a reputable location, don't worry.  Double check the "best by" date and if it makes you uncomfortable, don't eat it.

Mayo is pasteurized so that shouldn't be it.

  • I googled...from what i picked up, it all goes back to the Listeria and cross contamination from being near the deli meat.  I think its fine...as a matter of fact it was quite delicious, so I followed it with a couple fork fulls of potato salad as well.
  • The only thing I can think that would be wrong with macaroni salad is the mayo.  So, I googled.

This is the only thing I found:

    Listeria

Listeriosis is a flu-like illness which you can get from food that contains listeria bacteria. Although it?s rare in the UK, listeriosis can cause stillbirth, miscarriage or severe illness in newborn babies.

Don't eat foods where high levels of listeria are occasionally found. For example:

    • Soft and blue veined cheeses, such as camembert, brie and stilton. There?s no risk of listeria from hard cheese such as cheddar or from cottage cheese or processed cheese.
    • P?t?: all types of p?t?, including vegetable p?t?.
    • Some prepared salads, such as potato salad and coleslaw.
    • Ready meals or reheated food, unless they?re piping hot all the way through.

Ew, why would mac salad contain raw eggs?

I wouldn't worry about it. Mac away.

  • I actually work in the mayo industry (as odd as that sounds). As long as you buy mayo off the shelf, it contains pasturized egg. I would only worry about macaroni salad that is left out of refrigeration for more than an hour. Also some people do make their own mayo, which would contain raw eggs. When in doubt, ask.

  • ahhh the perks of being paranoid. lol. most mayos that stores use to make any of their salads are bought, not made in store. its a big pain in the rear to make your own mayo (i have made it many times). HOWEVER, i went to a restaurant recently and had to turn away the thousand island dressing...it contained raw eggs. and, sometimes, since i used to work at a restaurant, i dont trust the sauces at restaurants. now, ladies, dont go freaking yourselves out about this, it happened to be a small locally owned place and they "freshen" the dressing up with their own mayo. i guess it does and doesnt help to be a culinary student and my husband is a chef..he is more paranoid than i am!
