If your dc takes dance,

what kind of class did you put them in and do they enjoy it?

Right now dd is in a sampler type class but in the fall I have to decide between putting her in ballet, tap, or pom.  Opinions appreciated!

Re: If your dc takes dance,

  • DD is 2 1/2 and started dance class in July.  She LOVES it!  So much that she cries when the class is over.  At her dance academy, the class for her age group is an hour long.  It's divided into 3 sections--20 min. of tap, 20 min. of ballet, and 20 min. of gymnastics.

If I were you and had to choose between the 3, I'd go with ballet.  It's the foundation of dance and some of the techniques she'll learn can (sort of) translate to other forms of dance.

  • DD did tap and really enjoyed it. I signed her up again for this school year. She goes 1 night a week for 30 minute sessions.

  • DD starts dance class in September.  Her class is 45 minutes once a week and will be half tap, half ballet.
  • I have enrolled D in a combo class.

If I had to decide though, I would definitely start with ballet. It is the foundation of all things dance so that's where I would start if I had to choose.

  • DD started ballet at 3.  She loves it but it is very hard for her.  She is super shy and cried in the beginning.  Today was her recital and she refused to dance since people were watching.  I am hoping she will become more comfortable as time goes on.

  • Sophia currently takes classes at with the local rec center. When she had just turned 2 she took a Mommy & Me (parents are in the room) ballet class. She extremely shy, but really warmed up and enjoyed it and loved the recital. This past year she took tap and also enjoyed it. To give her a variety this year we are taking jazz and ballet since she missed wearing a tu-tu. The classes at the rec are more fun and less technique which for this age I think is spot on.

If she continues to enjoy dancing when she turns 5, I plan on sending her to a private studio for lessons so that she will learn more techniques and discipline.
