Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Would you travel with LO overseas??

I have a friend that lives in Spain and I would really like to visit her. I am a teacher and have 2 weeks off in March for Spring Break. I thought this would be the perfect time to plan the trip but DH is having serious reservations about taking LO over seas. Anyone traveled over seas or cross country with LO? I think DH is most concerned about the 8 hour flight and the effects of the time difference on Tahlia's naps and bedtime sleep.

Would you go??

  • I flew with Jackson and DH and his parents from Newark to Las Vegas in June.  It wasn't that big of a deal.  The time difference wasn't great not gonna lie.  We just put him to bed Vegas time rather than East Coast time... he still got up his regular East Coast time, but he snoozed in bed with us for another few hours in the morning.  The rest of his schedule adjusted to the time change.

If your daughter does well in her carseat, I recommend getting her her own seat.  We had one for Jackson and it was a lifesaver.

ETA: We don't do naps by a certain time on the clock...  it is generally after he has been awake for a certain amount of time.  The same with food... he eats every x hours or so... so that wasn't hard to adjust.

Good to know- thank you.  We feed every 4 hours and nap every 3 hours as well.  I don't think it would be too hard to adjust to either. I am a little nervous about the bedtime/wake time thing though.  I think Spain is 7 hours ahead of us, so adjusting to the time difference could be difficult. I just think we should do it now before planning for #2.  Once we have 2, big trips like that will have to be put on hols I think.

  • We travel all the time...domestic (in Europe) and trans-continental. I'd definitely go! The flights aren't that bad. I would get LO her own seat (with car seat)...ESPECIALLY for the flight to Europe because it'll most likely be overnight.

As long as you'll be there for 1-2 weeks, it's worth the fuss of time zone changes. It's easier time zone wise, traveling from Europe to the US, but even coming to Europe isn't that bad.

Take advantage of every travel opportunity that arises!

  • I would go!  DS was born in Okinawa and we just recently moved back from there.  The long flight actually wasn't all bad.  I also agree with the getting LO a seat, because it does get long.  I recommend keep all your baby food in one bag, as far as carry on, because you'll probably have to take it out.  I learned the hard way...I had a couple packs under everything in the rolly suitcase and they made me take it apart.  I figured they would just want to see the liquid stuff...

  • I wouldn't think twice about it. The flights are usually overnight, so she'll probably sleep most of it. I took DS from Seattle to Christchurch, NZ for 2 weeks in November. DH was already there, so I handled 3 layovers eachway with a newborn. It wasn't too bad. I bet it'll be harder with a toddler, but it will be so worth it!
  • I'm taking DS to Australia by myself in December. I've taken him to the UK by myself before, and will again in February. If there are two of you, you'll be able to manage it.
  • We took DD1 to Belgium to visit family when she was 7 months. It was way easier then I had expected (and she was a super difficult baby!). The flight was a breeze. If she wasn't sleeping, she was looking around at all the people or we were walking around. No big deal. It was an 8 hr flight + 3 hr layover + another hour flight.

DD adjusted very easily to the time change. Way more easily then DH or me! Babies are pretty good about time changes. I think the first 2 nights she got up around 2 am for a couple hours but it wasn't a big deal. Then she went back to sleeping and napping normally (her normal nap/sleep hours, just on the new time) for the trip.

Honestly, now is the time to do it! I would love to go back to visit my family again and have them meet DD2, but I am terrified of that long of a trip w/ my 2.5 yo! It was so much easier when she was a baby :)
