Natural Birth

Overdue AGAIN! WWYD?

Last time I kept having tons of pre-labor, but never went active until I took castor oil at 41w3d.  This was on my MW recommendation and was my last resort since my induction was scheduled for 41w5d.  It worked great for me and my DD was born after 4 hrs of active labor.

They haven't really made any recommendations for castor oil this time (still early?), but I'm seriously thinking I'm going to self-induce on Monday if I'm still pg!!  WWYD?

Re: Overdue AGAIN! WWYD?

  • I started trying castor oil at 39 1/2 weeks.  Never worked for me.  I went into labor on my own at 40 wks. 1 day - so maybe today is the day.  If you want to try castor oil again, I say go for it.  It worked for you last time, maybe it will this time too :)

  • I will never do castor oil again.  All it did for me was cure my constipation. LOL  Lily came when she was ready.

As with any natural induction method- it won't work unless your LO is ready.  You are only one day pass your ESTIMATED due date.  Relax.

This. And I would ask when your providers want to induce so you know how late they're willign to let you go? If there's no pressure for medical induction, then I would just wait for labor to start on its own...

  • One, you are not yet OVERDUE.  This Harvard study found that contrary to popular belief, normal gestation for healthy uncomplicated pregnancies is 41 and 1/7 weeks not 40 weeks.  (41 weeks and one day).  Unless there is fear that something is wrong inducing before this time is not necessary and may be harmful to your baby.  Google: The Length of Uncomplicated Human Gestation. Choose www.journalslww.com and then click on the PDF link on the right hand side of the page to read the whole article. I would have posted the link but it made a slider on the post and you couldnt read everything I typed. =(

Due dates are also not fool proof as sperm can live in your system for up to 5 days before fertilizing an egg. Your due date may be inaccurate.  So it would be wise to tack 5-10 days to the length of your due date and not induce unless there are major problems before that date.  Anxiety about being late also will put off labor....

  • I'd wait it out (and I did wait it out). Your baby might just need a few more days in there.

I'd hold off on the castor oil. My midwife gave me a "castor oil cocktail" recipe at 41wks, 6 days. I ended up never needing it...went into labor the following morning.
