Natural Birth

"Honestly, I've been expecting this..."

I just wanted to say that I really love my husband :) I have been debating natural child birth for awhile and then watched "The Business of Being Born" with my husband last week and it has pushed me over the edge. I've also decided that I would like to have a water birth. Tonight I told my husband that I wanted to talk to him about birthing. When I explained to him what I wanted to do and that I didn't want to go the OB route he said "Honestly, I've been expecting this conversation for awhile". I said "Why? Because I'm a feminist hippie?" and he was like, "Well, you have always been kind of... anti-establishment" and laughed. It was really good. He helped me to realize that this is more of who I've been all along so it's actually not that weird for me to choose to give birth this way. What a great guy :)

  • Awwww!  That's so great.  I am constantly grateful that my husband is also on board with my desire for a midwife, birthing center, waterbirth!  I think he's absorbed my years of ranting about the busted birthing system.

  • It's great when you have your DH onside.

My Dh was always, "I have no idea why you wouldn't want drugs, but you're the one doing the work, so just whatever you want."

Then we went to an antenatal class where they went through all the pain relief options and the potential risks.

As soon as he heard the risks associated with the epi, he was super supportive of me going natural.

  • Yay for supportive husbands :)  That said, even if you were totally pro-establishment, it wouldn't be weird.  Birthing babies is a woman's thing - that's the only requirement for any kind of delivery!  Doesn't matter if you're hippie, right-wing, religious, vegan, carnivore, whatever.

  • Isn't it great to have the full support of your DH? We started our birthing research off by watching The Business of Being Born and were both shocked by what we saw.  We Googled relentlessly, read books, and watched more videos and decided together that going natural was best for us.  It's amazing to have DH on board with my birth decision and to know that he will do a great job being my advocate when the big day arrives!
  • dont forget "because I am a woman who thinks that the health and safety of me and my baby is important enough to research my choices and make decisions based on that research and not on what 'most people' do."

    Well done!

  • That's so awesome! This got me curious, I asked my husband if he was surprised by my decision to go natural at a birthing center (he was never against it), he said he wasn't surprised at all, it just seemed like something I would do, because I'm pretty anti-establishment. Haha! I'll tell you, having his support was the most important thing during labor, he was my rock and the reason I got through it, couldn't have done it without him.

  • Haha, that's great!

I remember at my baby shower when I was pg with DS, I told one of my friends how I was going med-free and she was like, "See, I knew you'd do something crazy!"  Psh, whatever, girl... the crazy ones are the ones who want to be paralyzed, lol!

  • That's awesome! I am the same exact way. As soon as I watched The Business of Being Born I knew that I couldn't just stand by and let my experience be pushed under the bed, and I made DF watch it and he AGREED! I was so excited and actually had my very first midwife appointment on Friday and it was amazing. I can't wait to have my home/water birth Big Smile
