After having three previous easy and noncomplicated pregnancies, I found out I had complete placenta previa at 20 weeks and was scheduled for a c section at 36 weeks, assuming the amnio results showed lung maturity. At 31 weeks I started bleeding and was put on hospital bedrest. At 31 weeks, 5 days, I had a placental abruption (thank God I was already at the hospital) and had an emergency c section. Although I lost a ton of blood and had to be tranfused and spent time in the ICU, Wesley was 3 pounds, 14 ounces, and did not need any oxygen (I had the steroid shots while on bedrest) and his hemoglobin was fine. He is now in the NICU and doing well. They will try to see if he can maintain his temperature in an open crib in another week and then he will have to work on bottle feeding. Right now he has a fedding tube. I never thought that I would give birth to a baby so early. I'm still kind of in shock.
Re: New preemie mom introduction
Congratulations! I had a 31 weeker as well. She's home now and doing great! Like PP said, I was in such shock at having a baby so early. It took me a couple of weeks to post here, but this is a great board and you will find lots of support. 30-33 weekers do great and have basically the same outcomes as full term babies. I wish you a short and uneventful stay in the NICU.
Also, I read recently that an aweful lot of famous smarties were 2 months early - Einstein, Newton, and several PhDs that I know.
Congratulations on your little one! I'm glad to hear you are both doing well.
I also had an abruption at 31 weeks. DS was in NICU for 47 days. He is doing great now but it was a long road! these girls are great about answering questions and making things seem less scary. I hope your NICU stay is short and uneventful!
