Webbed toes

Anyone's dc have it?  My dd has 2 toes that look like they are fused together like a duck's foot - the toes are separated at the top of the toe but it's webbed about halfway down the toes.

My dd is 2 weeks old today and no one- not the nurses, the doctors, my pedi - no one noticed it.  I saw it last night for the first time myself.  How could we all miss something so obvious?

I left a message with my pedi but I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with this.  I assume it is a cosmetic procedure where they can snip between the two toes to separate them fully - but I wanted to know if anyone had to do this - or if it is more complicated.  My dh is now calling our dd ducky.  I have to fix this!!!

Thanks.

Re: Webbed toes

  • My DS has webbed toes. He got them from his father. All of the guys on DH side of the family have them. It probably wont bother my DS since he is a boy after all and they don't really care about stuff like that.

  • Zachary has two webbed toes - joined at the second knuckle.  It doesn't seem to bother him, so we're not doing anything about it.  I never really thought twice about it.

I guess for a girl it might be different though... sandals, pedicures, etc.

  • My sister's girlfriend had webbed toes ... almost all of them were webbed, I think.  She eventually had surgery to have them split ... she was about 20ish.
  • I just read a ton of stuff about it.  Apparently, it is genetic although both my family and dh's family says no one ever had it in our family.  Hmmm...I'm not so sure about that one!

Pediatrician said no good doctor would even consider doing anything before she is 5 or 6 and it's not necessary to do anything- it's purely cosmetic.

Aimeelv - I agree- if it was a boy, I wouldn't think twice.  But who knows with a girl.  She might not care or she might be very sensitive about it.  As long as it won't affect her balance and is just cosmetic, I will let her decide if she wants it fixed or not.  If that is the only "issue" she ever has, then I'll be very blessed for it to be such a small thing.

    Thanks everyone!

  • I have webbed toes on my left foot - similar to what you described.  When I was in elementary school, I was very self conscious about it, but I eventually decided it was cool.  Now I get a kick out of seeing what the people at the nail salon do when they come across it.  My son has it on both feet, and I like our little connection.  From what I have read, the splitting procedure is very painful.

  • I have webbed toes on my left foot (DD doesn't, though) - just the 2nd and 3rd toe to the middle joint.  It has never bothered me, and I don't think anyone has ever noticed unless I point it out.  The surgery to separate them sounds awful, so unless it was really severe, I think I'd leave it alone.

My mom, however, hates hers and wishes she'd had surgery when she was younger.  Hers are more webbed then mine (same toes, just higher up) and she thinks it's contributed to some joint trouble she's had b/c the toes can't spread apart.

Just keep in mind that toe socks will never  fit! :)  (My mom bought me these once - I don't know what she was thinking!  They hurt!)
