Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How do I get some sleep? (LO squirming)

My LO is keeping me awake at night because she keeps squirming. It wasn't so bad the first couple of month but it has slowly become more common that she has a night where she squirms for most of it. Firstly DD can't fall asleep herself yet, meaning I nurse her to sleep or rock her, then put her in her crib. When she wakes up the first time (if I'm lucky not before 4am but now frequently 2am) I take her into my bed to lie down and nurse her. Then she proceeds to squirm the rest of the night, with me nursing her almost each hour so she calms down. I sometimes try to take her up and burp her, but mostly no burp comes up. She always keeps her eyes closed until around 8am where she then wakes up. Is there anything I can do to prevent this squirming? Have anyone tried this? We don't have a separate room for her until later in September and then I am still not comfortable about putting her in there because I find it easier to be close for night feedings.

DD is 3 months on Thursday, so this is my first post to this board :-) TIA.

  • We had to move DS out of our bed because he moved so much. Is her crib in your room? Right now, I just have to make sure to put him back in his crib after feeding. He does better with his own space.

  • You could try swaddling. My guy wakes me and him up from squirming but the second hos arms are secure he passes out even before I am done wrapping him lol!

  • If possible I would put her back in her crib after feeding her.  Babies squirm in their sleep and you may be nursing her when you don't really need to.  Nursing her to sleep rather than let her squirm could also prevent her from learning to fall back to sleep on her own, which is a very important skill.

  • Thanks. I have tried to put her back in her crib a couple of times but then she wakes herself up and starts crying. She seems to like being close to me. I also tend to do this half asleep myself, so I fall back asleep sometimes feeding her lol. But you are right she needs to start learning to fall asleep herself, perhaps I should try putting her back in her crib again after feeds.

  • Is she fussing or crying when she goes back down?  With DD#2, I noticed she would sometimes fuss but if I left her alone she'd fall back asleep.  With DD#1 though it seemed like any cry she gave was an all out cry.

Unfortunately some babies are just better sleepers than others.  So while you'll hear one mom talk about sleeping 10 hours all night, other babies are up ever hour or two.  It gets better, I promise.
