Potty Training

Night time PTing?

DH and I were discussing this last night. We want to try PTing starting next weekend, but DH is convinced that we should do just the the daytime for now. DD has been sleeping/napping horribly lately, so he's concerned that PTing her during this time would be a lot harder at night and wants to do just daytime for now. So I was wondering how many of you did just the daytime PTing and left nighttime for later and what were your reasons?

Re: Night time PTing?

  • Does your child stay dry overnight now?  My daughter was staying dry for the most part at night before we started potty training.  Once we potty trained her, I still put diapers or pull-ups on at night, just until I finished off the pack of pull-ups.  I think she may have went 1 time overnight once she was potty trained in the beginning.  I'm not going to say she has never had an accident in the last 7 months, but they are far and few of them.  If your child has to pee they will get up.  My daughter usually gets up between 4 and 6 and has to pee.  Sometimes she will go until 7 before she has to get up.  I don't think I would confuse things and not do nighttime training if you are going to train during the day.  Consistency is the key.  Good luck!

  • Thank you for your response. She still pees at night. A lot. And the thing is she's been sleeping so crappily and is just now starting to sort of be able to go to bed ok, and only if my DH puts her down, so I'm afraid this'll be rough on him if he has to get up with her so many times at night.
  • I took Bieanca's advice and stopped giving Olivia liquids about 2 hours before she goes to bed(basically her sippy cup) if she gets thirsty i will give her some water in her little dixi cup. This has helped Olivia wake up in the morning dry.

I am going to try this. DD loves Milk at dinner and we eat at 5 bed at 7 so that would be hard but I might be able to pacify her with a cup of milk/water in a dixie.

I will say we have DD in a pull up for nap/bed. She is peeing Less and Less during these times since she has gotten the hang of the potty. It is a HUGE developmental thing to learn how to wake up or hold it that long. We are only going to swap her to undies for them when she consistently wakes up dry.

  • It was strange, but when we started potty training during the day, is when they started to wake up dry in the morning. I still do pull-ups/diapers at night, I just don't want to deal with the accidents, call me lazy!  I could NEVER go wake them up in the middle of the night to go pee, they would be like "What the heck are you doing????"  I did cut down on the liquids, and make them go pee before bed. :)
