Anyone make meat purees?

Honestly, even typing the title was a little gross to me.  I mean, meat puree?!    So far, we have not introduced any meat to DD, but I suppose it is time.  Anyone make their own, or did you just buy the commercial stuff?

Also, tell the truth- how bad are the diaper changes after meat is introduced?

Re: Anyone make meat purees?

  • I tried chicken and turkey; really it didn't gross me out, but I understand how some people are. It worked best with dark meat. Harris had issues with texture and white meat just didn't puree very smooth. Even trying to smooth it out with liquid just made a grainy mixture. When I used dark meat it was incredible how different it turned out. Harris did a lot better with it, too.

After a few weeks I didn't keep it up. The pedi said the meat sticks were good for introducing meat, too (the little gerber ones that look like vienna sausages). Since we weren't introducing meat until he was better with finger foods anyhow this was a good option for us. They were easily mushed and he handled them well. We diced them up and for the first few weeks peeled the skin off so it was really easy for him to chew.

  • I made pureed chicken.  It was not a hit.  The cubes ended up getting tossed, which killed me.  She prefers getting little tiny cut-up pieces of meat, so we've been doing that.  And yeah, the poop is definitely stinkier.  It's like grown-up poop.

  • We buy Earth's Best meat purees in the jars.  I heard if you are making it you can mix in some pear to help with the texture.  I make other food, but don't think I will try meat.  She likes the jars though.  The poop is more stinky than BM poop, but not too terrible.  Good luck!

  • Ive done chicken and turkey. The first time I did turkey was thanksgiving. Im an AW so here is Kylie eating her pureed Tday dinner (sweetpotatoes, turkey, green beans, and butternut squash) She didnt eat the whole plate lol, but we put it like that so she could feel like a big girl :) It was white meat, and I pureed it with breastmilk. It was pretty runny.

  • We bought the earth's best pureed baby food with meat because it grossed me out thinking about doing this myself. Some of them are super smooth consistency and some are more gritty. The one with the lentils is gritty. DS doesn't seem to mind either consistency so if your own turn out gritty, just give it a try and see what your LO will take. We are about to just start giving him fresh meat that we cut up into small pieces. I think he's about ready for it. GL!

  • I've tried chicken (white meat only) and it has not been a big hit with DD.  She doesn't seem to like the consistency.  I'm probably going to throw the cubes of chicken away because I am sick of trying to get ehr to eat them :(  But I have given her chicken and turkey in the form of Earth's Best dinner jars and she LOVES those.
