Paying a relative for childcare?

We are lucky enough that my husband's aunt is a stay-at-home wife and has mentioned she might be able to take care of the LO when I return to work (at least a couple days a week). We know we want to pay her something for her taking the LO, but aren't sure how much is appropriate. Does anyone have any suggestions??? We are at a complete loss - help!!

  • Figure out what the going rate is for an in home daycare provider in your areas vs. a nanny and I'd pay her somewhere in between.  (It can vary substantially even between suburbs, so you really need to be specific and call ones in your neighborhood)

  • My MIL watched DD and even though she is a relative she is on a fixed income since she is retired.  We pay her about $25 a day which is about $250 every two weeks.  It's definitely a huge savings since the cost of a normal daycare would be a lot more than that but I would talk to your aunt and maybe you two can come to some sort of agreement.
