Stupid Question - What is a layette?

I received a brochure type thing in the mail a couple weeks ago with a pretty awesome baby necessities checklist on it. It has served me well so far.

One category is 'Layette'. I feel like such a dummy not knowing what a layette is. The things listed beneath it seem to be a lot of things needed for the baby's hospital stay. Is that basically what it is? The baby bag for the hospital?

A layette is a baby outfit.  It normally consists of a sleep n play, hat, and footies, but can vary a lot.  They can have a bib, or blanket, so on.  Simply put: an outfit!

It's a fancy schmancy word for the clothes your baby will need when he/she first comes home.  Usually consists of things like gowns, mittens, hats, etc.  Like if you buy a layette set at Carter's or some place it usually has these things.

Got it. Too bad they couldn't just label it 'clothes'. That would have been a lot easier. Haha.

When you go to the store, like Target, and they have the cute little outfit that comes on the hanger and it has a onesie, pants (some have footies attached, a bib and a hat (some also have a sweater), that is a layette. Like, a complete outfit.

Haha! My MIL texted me the other day saying that Bloomingdales had "beautiful layette clothes" and I had no idea what she was talking about. I had to Google it.
