DD still uses white noise..

We play a CD of water running for her at night just for a couple of hours while we are awake. Its nice because we don't have to worry about being quiet or she'll wake up. I am just worried it's going to damage her ears if we play it too long or too loud. We obviously dont blast it but its loud enough so you can hear it in the hallway. Does anyone else?

  • we still use the sound machine but A is just a little younger than yours.  i have no intention of stopping it anytime soon though- her room is far too close to the TV room

We still use ocean sounds for my DD all night long.  She actually will not sleep hardly if we don't run it.  We however don't have it very loud so I'm not worried about it hurting her ears.  Maybe if your concerned work it so that you slowly turn it down over a period of a couple of weeks to see if she needs it that loud.  She may be more of a sound sleeper than you think.

Anyone know when they should be weaned off of the sound machine?  I don't want DD to be dependent on it forever and need it for sleep overs etc. when she is older.

  • DS still uses his sound machine for white noise.  He might not need it anymore, but it has become such a part of his bedtime routine, that I hate to cut it out.  It is the cue for him that it is sleepy time.  We also take his sound machine while we travel and it helps him adjust to the new surroundings.  With baby # 2 on the way, I think we are going to be using it for a long time.  I don't think it hurts him at all!

  • We use the rain noise very quietly. The louder part of her room is the a/c unit, and that's not anything we can change unless we let her roast. I've used white noise for about 15 years now at night, and have ridiculously sensitive hearing. In fact, that's why I use it. I can't sleep through any noise. I wouldn't worry :)
  • We also still use it because we live in a condo and her bedroom is right outside the living room.  I don't play it very loud though - definitely not loud enough to be concerned about her ears.  I agree with PP - try to work the level down a little each night.

  • DH and I have used white noise since we've been married.  Since DS slept in a bassinet in our room from birth to 3 mo, he also has had white noise.  Now, in his room, he has white noise, so he's had it all his life.

I don't plan on getting rid of mine and DH's white noise ever, and same goes for DS.

I have the white noise CD downloaded to my iPod and we use speakers when we travel.

This exactly!  We also bring a white noise machine when we travel.

  • We run a humidifier for white noise. We started back last fall when she was stuffy and needed it and have just kept it going. I have no plans to stop. DH and I sleep with a fan for white noise, even in the dead of winter (we just point it at the wall).

  • We still run the crack machine in DD's room with the ocean sound.  I have not intention on stopping it.  DH and I use a fan in our room for white noise.   We have an extra sound machine for when we travel.

  • We have a friend who is a full grown adult and he brings a fan with him whenever he travels so he has familiar white noise.  It's a little quirky, but I can't say his life seems any worse for it.

Ha!  This is sooo me.  I cannot sleep without white noise, like a fan.  Complete silence freaks me out.

  • We have a fan on in her room every nap and night.  I don't know if she needs it, but it makes me feel better using it, especially now that DS is here.

  • I cannot sleep without a fan running and I am 28 years old.  My son sleeps with a fan going as well mostly to drown out the sounds of the cars driving by, us talking, the TV, the dogs.  I am sure he will sleep with it the rest of his life, just like me.

  • DD still sleeps with whitenoise too.  I downloaded a waterfall type white noise off iTunes and she's been using it since she was about a month old.  I don't play it too loud though. I hadn't even thought of getting rid of it soon.
