Clicky Poll: Tipping on delivery

Re: Clicky Poll: Tipping on delivery

  • I don't tip a percentage.  I tip $3 or $4 and sometimes more, depending on weather, how big the order is and how far away the restaurant is.  In the city most guys are on bikes and so those factors make a big difference.
  • It depends a little....the order has to be correct - I used to be a server and I believe it is the server/delivery person's job to dbl check to make sure the order is matched to the ticket - and it also depends if there is a delivery fee.  I think delivery fees are bogus (when the person is using their own car), so we try to avoid places that charge a fee and will then tip the driver more.

  • If the weather is bad I tip 20% or more but if it isn't I'm more a 15% tipper (but I always round up).

  • And I will now quote DH's response, "What a bunch of cheapos."  Except the 20-25% group.  I always tip about 20%, but he thinks we need to tip more for delivery than we would in a restaurant.
  • Funny!  A good friend of mine did delivery driving in college and he got paid a lot more than the servers so he always tipped crap for delivery.

  • My brother has been a delivery driver for years and says that $2-3 on an average order is good, more is nice but not expected unless it's an unusually large order that requires extra work.  Generally delivery drivers are paid at least minimum wage plus gas (or at least where we live), so they aren't counting on tips the way a restaurant server is.  Besides, as he puts it, a server works really hard going back and forth and are on their feet all night.  A delivery driver is handed the orders, walks to his/her car, drives around listening to their favorite music and walks to your front door then is done.

See, I think a LOT more work goes into being a server.....managing several tables, many ppl at each table, appetizers, entrees, desserts, drinks, bread, special requests.  We're a big tipper for great service at a sit-down restaurant...25-30+%.  We had fantastic service one time and tipped 100%.  She was super polite, got all our quirky changes right the first time, napkins, drinks.  She was all over it. Then she came back in tears when she realized what we did (we were still packing up the kids).   Come to find out she was like 17-18, got pregnant, parents kicked her out and this was her first job trying to do it all alone.
