Mismatched nursery furniture?

I just was looking at a friend on FB's pictures of her son's nursery.  She has a dark wood crib, similar in color to ours, a white dresser, and a blue bookcase.  The rocker was also white.  I think it looked really cute.  I was told when decorating my son's nursery last year that all the furniture should match in color.  I really suck at decorating, but what do you think of purposely mismatched furniture in a nursery?  Cute or weird looking?  I also love how she found some old windows with peeling paint and hung them on the wall.  Really interesting look.  Maybe I can pull off something like this if we have a girl and go for my idea of a floral/garden decor.

I'm personally not a fan of mismatched furniture but have seen it done - it can look great or like a disaster. Ask yourself this question: 1. do I want to buy furniture when s/he gets older?  Would this look last longer than the nursery yrs?

I don't know who told you that it "should" match! There is no should or shouldn't, except that it SHOULD be the way YOU like it!

DS has dark wood and light wood in his nursery and I thought I would hate it and that it would just be temporary but I actually really like it now. DD has all white and it could almost be too much white, but it looks really nice. One more thing and yea, too much :)

We have a black crib, black nightstand, white shelving, and white changing table/dresser. I don't really consider that "mismatched" though because they are contrasting colors. I think if done right, like shabby chic or antique, mismatched furniture can look great! my pet peeve is when wood doesn't match, for example, when I see a light wood crib next to a dark wood dresser. Mine won't match, I have the rocking chair from my nursery (as in when I was a baby) and my parents got over excited and bought us a crib. I haven't seen it yet but I doubt it matches the rocker and I still have to pick out the other stuff. I'm glad to hear it can look cute!!!

I did the main pieces (crib, dresser) in matching wood and then did accent pieces in other colors (side table is green). I think that if they are very different colors its ok but not different shades of wood. EX; a cherry crib and a white table is ok but an oak crib and cherry dresser no way!

Ours is mismatched because its a lot of hand-me-downs (only thing new is the crib).  I would've liked to get a matching set, but it was cheaper this way.

I think it could work. Maybe find your central piece, the crib, and then buy one piece at a time.  Just to make sure you don't go overboard mixing up stuff.

Oh and post pics when you are done!!!

Yeah...my pics were so old. I got 3 kids. Nuff said. :)

I really dislike matching matchy rooms so ours will cordinate but not match (the crip will be darker wood but not espresso, the rest will be white, with a light blue or green bookcase).

But none of our rooms have matchy furniture and I love the look.

Our furniture is all the same color (antique white) but it is not your typical nursery "set".

We are using an antique buffet as a dresser/ changing table, an antique corner spindle shelf, and a new crib.  I pesonally love that it is not matchy matchy!

It has to be done right for it to look nice IMO.

My husband and I built an Arts and Crafts style home and it has different woods through out.  We have oak trim and brazilian hardwood floors.  In my research, my tastes, and what I've seen in other homes its not good to have all one wood, it looks too matched and shows no warmth (not very homey).  I also see the nursery as a temporary room.  The child will soon enough outgrow the crib and the rocker won't be in there.  Nor are we buying furniture at the same place.  Hope this helps.

Our nursery isn't a 'set', the main theme is natural wood and we just have several natural wood pieces that are similar in shade but not matchy-matchy.  Different woods finishes together is ok now, it's not the faux pas it once was.

I think it can be done well. I personally lack the decorating gene, so if I tried to do it it would look like crap.

We're using a dresser and bookshelf we already have, so we'll be buying a crib to match. I'm going to try my hardest, but it's stained pine furniture, so there's a chance that if I can't find a good match, we'll just be buying a white crib or something that kind of "goes".

I much prefer a collection of things I really love over a set. We do have matching dining room and living room furniture (wedding gifts), but my favorite room in the house is the living room where it is all just different stuff we like. We are not planning any theme for the baby's room and will probably add to it gradually over getting a set. We hope to have all hardwood and prefer used over new, though we'll probably go new for the crib. I also am not planning matched bedding. My plan now is to paint the walls a soft grey so any mishmash of colored stuff we end up with will stand out and look festive and bright.

I don't think that everything has to be exactly the same, but should go together well... we have built in furniture in the baby's room (closets and a dresser), and we can't find matching furniture, so we are going to look for a crib that is complimentary to the wood of what we already have, etc.

i think if it looks cute then go for it : ) all of ours will be the same color but that was just how it worked out... I used to want to do interior design and one of the things they taught me in college over and over again was that a lot of times things look a lot better if they DONT match so well... just as long as the items you choose go well together in one way or another.

Like having the same style furniture in all different colors can be really cute

or different style furniture in all the same color or with accents of the same color

    good luck : D

I am DEFINITELY doing mismatched furniture for the nursery, but I am a non-traditional person by nature so I am going for a more adult-like nursery. No offense to anyone else but the cutesy nurseries with matching furniture and animal themes are just NMS.

All matching pieces is also NMS. I think that a nice mix looks the best.

We will be reusing my childhood dressers (oak) and having a white crib and book shelf.  We couldn't find a good oak color crib, so we opted for white.  I have yet to even begin the nursery, so I am unsure of how it will look.  I am not a decorator and usually prefer things to match.  We shall see! Huh?

Ours doesn't match.  It kinda annoys me, but everything but the crib was free and hard to match too.  The dresser is white wicker and my old one from my childhood.  The changing table is an antique drysink that my brother, his kids, myself and DS have all used (it is phenomenal piece) and it is dark stained oak.  The crib is a shade lighter than that.  The rocker/recliner is a hand-me-down in green, and not very attractive but is cozy.  I wish it looked more out of a magazine, but each piece serves its purpose.

Ours probably won't match as we're getting hand me down furniture (dresser, etc) but buying the crib ourselves.  No big deal.  The baby certainly won't care.

I am not a fan of matchy-matchy furniture suites for any room. I think a room looks much better if you pull together different pieces that you've selected yourself. You can find different pieces in the same finish, but there's nothing wrong with matching different finishes either, if you tie the room together cohesively.

I think we're going to keep our nursery pretty fresh and simple looking with a mix of white-painted and unstained birch or pine.
