Anyone have experience with MoMo twins?

I had three ultrasounds early in my pregnancy and each time we only saw one baby.  Then this week I went in for the NT scan and was absolutely shocked to see twins moving around!  Unfortunately we could also clearly see that they are monoamniotic.  Anyone have success stories they want to share? I need to hear some positive experiences. Thanks.

  • How far along are you?  Is it possible the membrane just isn't visible quite yet?  My Peri had a tough time finding mine at 10 weeks.  It was super thin and not obvious at all.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I guess you must be around 12 weeks, which is the optimal time to see a membrane. I am sorry you got this news, but there is tons of hope! Check out the message boards at monoamniotic.org.

(I didn't have any momos in my set, but we thought two were until 23 weeks.)

I know lots of happy, healthy, thriving twins who were momos. There is hope! Check out that message board!

  • I don't have any experience but to say we had a hard time seeing the membrane between our girls at the first visit too.  They are mo-di twins though (or di-tri triplets).  Best of luck and I hope you will find some good support.

  • Was just lurking from another board and saw your post.  My friends' sister has "momo" twins.  They didn't discover the lack of membrane until she was around 20 weeks (late, I know) and almost immediately put her on hospital bedrest.  The girls were born at 32 weeks and spent 6 weeks (I believe) in the NICU, but are now very healthy beautiful 5 month old babies.  I'm sure its scary, but there are definitely happy endings.  I hope everything turns out well for you and your babies.
  • My experience is similar... I went for my first doctor's appt. at 7 weeks, and have ultrasound pics of our little baby (singular)...then I wenIt in at 9 weeks, and was shocked to see two little babies on the screen!  I was even more shocked with the doctor said she could only see one sac, and how my entire preganncy may now change drastically....but we would have to wait 3 days (over the weekend) to get a better ultrasound and know for sure!  I am scared and worried!  Twins do not run in our families, and we were not using fertility assistance....  strange?

    excited, yet terrified..... Thanks!

  • My twins started as mo-di, but entered the same sac at 24 weeks.  The treatment for TTTS caused a hole in the membrane and since then they have been living in the same sac with the membrane just floating around.  I am being treated as mono-mono twins.  I was offered hospital bedrest at 26 weeks, but my doctors and I decided that as long as I can come to the hospital every day for treatment, I can continue to sleep at home.  I have non-stress test and biophysical profiles 5 times a week.  I have seen the doctor weekly.  Because of the possibility of cord compression, doctors usually want to deliver between 32-34 weeks (exactly how far is dependent on the doctor) with a C-section.  I am scheduled for a C-section at 34 weeks exactly.  Since my twins did not start mono-mono, I am not exactly in the same position as you, but I am being treated as if they did, so please let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi!  I had MoMo boys.  I suggest www.monoamniotic.org for sure.  It was my number one place during pregnancy.  I went inpatient at 24 weeks and had a c-secion at 32 weeks.  The boys were in the NICU for 6 weeks and now they are 18 week old champs!
