I forgot to mention.... My husband and I both spent 7 years sailing on ships as Merchant Marines (sailors) and we met in a shipyard so this would be something that ties in with our marriage... and has some symbolic connotations.

I like it-but spelled Sailor. No need to put that unnecessary Y to make it more girlie. Christy Brinkley's daughter is named Sailor, I think it's a cute girls name.

I was going to post that I didn't like it, but after hearing the background story, I think it is a great name!!! But, I agree, you should spell it Sailor.

This exactly. NMS at all, but I like that it has significance for you. However, please spell it correctly!!
Sailor is a name that is nms, but you actually have meaning behind it and I am sure that meeting a cute little Sailor would make it grow on me. Saylor is a misspelled version of that name that I do NOT like.

Then, by all means, use it, but spell it Sailor. Whether you are spelling it "Saylor" because that's the most popular spelling, the way you've seen it spelled, or simply to make it more feminine, you are also changing the meaning of the name and it's personal significance to your history. The term "sailor," while masculine, as many English words are, is not meant to harken inherently to one gender. I love to sail, therefore I am a sailor. So there is no real argument for changing the spelling. It will have more meaning and a sweet story behind it if you keep the traditional spelling: Sailor. And as an important and significant bonus, your daughter will not have to repeatedly spell her name for people; the spelling will be inferred naturally.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind."
- Kurt Vonnegut
This is one I'd actually like to see go away. Sorry. If you're going for the word name, Sailor (ala Christie Brinkley)...I'd say just go for it and use this spelling. Saylor still gives me images of girls on the docks for sailors, but the trying-to-be-Taylor spelling bugs me.

This, except I like either spelling.
