My brother is Matthew, and he goes by Matt, no need to name them the shortened version imo. Growing up I knew a ton of Matthews, I haven't heard it as much anymore though.

I wouldn't shorten it either, but I do know a Matt who is not named Matthew! I think that's why I'm liking it... I just don't hear it as much anymore.
Well...I have a son named Matthew, so obviously I'm partial to it. But one thing I will say is nice is that I get a TON of compliments on it. People always say things like 'oh that's a nice strong name' and you never get 'huh?' or 'how do you spell that' or 'that's you-neek' lol. We didn't chose the name because we were worried about what other people would think, we just thought it was a nice, classic name (and DHs name) and I knew lots of people named Matt and LOVED them all, so I had good associations with it.
So far we call him Matthew 99% of the time, and my husband goes by Matt, just to keep things clear. But I'm well aware that when he starts school he'll probably be called Matt.

Wow. Those things are really nice to hear. Your Matthew is adorable, BTW
It's one of my favorite AofGG names, and I've met both Matthews and Matts - both seem cool enough, but I think I'd lean towards the full name. But that's how I roll anyway.
Oh, wait - a mat is something you walk on and horrible nick name, Matty comes to mind. The only time I thought that was cute was in 13 Going on 30. Otherwise it's a tangle of hair.
ETA: it was in the top 10 from 1972 to 2008, but I don't know anyone younger than 20 with that name.
It's just okay to me. It's a little boring to me, mainly because I know sooooo many of them (young to old).
...says the person with the most popular baby name? Your son's name is Jacob. Does it get any more popular than that?
I prefer Matthew.
Yep. I know what my son's name is.
Seriously, did you even read what I wrote?!
I said it is boring to me because I know so many of them. It is quite common to know many people with a certain name and that not be the most popular name in the US. I know a few Jacobs personally but 10+ Matthews.
I also did not say I had an issue with popularity (because I do not). I just think Matthew is boring and also know a ton of them. The End.
