Cannon or Nikon. I would try for cannon because you can put it on auto if you need to hand it to someone who hasn't learned all the features and they can Point and shoot with it.
I have what FK has. When the photographer was at our house doing lilies pictures she said it is a great camera if a pro opinion matters.
Since its a bidding situation I am going ot bid on the Cannon Eos Rebel and the NikonD5000. The cannon is starting at 200 and the Nikon starts at 250 so I think I would prefer the Nikon but it will depend on the price I can get it for.
I have a Nikon D3000 and I love it. I work with a Cannon 40D at work and that's great. Also FIL has a Pentax and it's very very nice, and possibly less expensive?

I like my Nikon. The camera shop I bought it from said the lens was better than the Canon Rebel XR and it was a couple hundred dollars cheaper.
I like it a lot so far.
Oh, just as an FYI, whatever Camera you do get don't base your decision on whether or not they offer video too. The video on those cameras (unless you are buying a really expensive one) do not pan you can only take a continuous video shot. IMO, not worth the extra couple hundred dollars when you could buy a flip or something like it that works WAY better.
