We have to trade in our leased vehicle soon and we'll be purchasing something in its place. DH doesn't think negotiating is fair. I told him EVERYONE negotiates.
I normally just lurk but had to jump in here. My dad taught me to NEVER pay sticker price for a car. New, used, doesn't matter. There is always room for negotiating.
We negotiated when we bought our car. I'm not sure it was with the price but I think it was with the interest rate. Normally they will do something if they want you to buy the car.
We didn't negotiate when we bought my car because we were young and stupid. We got a great deal though, so I don't really regret it. But I will never make a purchase that large again without negotiating.
The dealership where we bought our car has something called up front pricing and they say it's the lowest price possible so they won't negotiate. My H was a little disappointed because he was looking forward to it. They still wouldn't listen to his offers for a lower price, but magically, every time we walked away, they mysteriously lowered the price and called us back. So I guess they do negotiate, they just won't call it that.
Everything is negotiable. Sales price, interest rate, price of your warranty. EVERYTHING.
Their job is to make as much money as possible on the sale. Your job is to make sure you don't get buried. By not negotating, you are asking the dealer to crack you over the head at every turn.
If you happen to be able to pay in cash, do so. You can say I have X amount and I want *this* car for it out the door (tax, title, license, etc). A lot of times they will work with you. We bought my (used) minivan this way. It was a great deal and has lots of upgrades too

What Wee said. Always, always negotiate. MH is in the car business for 20 years and that's he does all the time.

Yes. Negotiate. It's built into the pricing so it would be unfair to you not to.
Does this make sense? I'm too sleepy to explain this well.

Holy cats. I need some negotiating tips from you. I think I'm going to be doing the negotiating.
Definitely negotiate!
You can't expect them to sell it to you at no-profit, but don't pay sticker either.
i'd like to hear more about that too, because if they are taking it off the sales price, they are putting it somewhere else. Just sayin'.
Unless it's a $100,000 car. Holy poo I thought we were doing good to get $3,000
