Babies on the Brain

In Vitro ?

Hey ladies, I have a quick question for one of my friends.  Her eggs were fertilized at age 34 and are now waiting until she is ready for baby number 2.  Since her eggs were fertilized then would she have the risk of a 34 year-old or the age she is when she chooses to use them?  We were talking about how the risk of down syndrome goes up at age 35 and we thought it was an interesting question.  Anyone know or have an opinion?

  • Since the eggs are already fertilized, they carry the risk of a 34 year old, not a 35+ year old.

  • I would think that it would be the age that the eggs and sperm were taken and fertilized.

I lurk every once and a while to see all the new babies and bellies, but doesn't seem like I have a ton to add with the current situation :)

I'll have to start a comeback pretty soon!

This. The risk of AMA has to do with the genetic material in the egg. So, she has the risk of whatever age she was when the egg was frozen.

  • The genetic risks for the embryo is the risk of a 34 yr old.  However, there are other risks that come from a pregnancy in a 35+ year old that she would then have, and I feel comfy saying this since I am AMA.
