For city dwellers-what stroller/carseat are you using?

I am planning on getting the Chicco Keyfit 30 car seat, but I am not sure what stroller to go with. I live in Brookline and go into the city via the T a few times a month. DH and I share a car, but he takes it M-F 7am-7pm, so the baby and I will get around by stroller most of the time. I was just going to get a snap and go frame for the first few months but DH thought they looked too flimsy and I'm worried about the winter months. I know the Uppababy is compatible with Chicco, but I was curious what everyone else is using.

  • I used the snap-n-go with my Chicco and didn't find it to be flimsy at all -- but I never had to try and roll it over snow or ice.

My son and I go EVERYWHERE in the stroller (I don't drive; we walk or T all over the place), and we use a City Mini.  When he was born they didn't have an adapter for the Chicco, but apparently they just came out with one this year.  I love the City Mini...it's so lightweight, rides well, and has the best, easiest fold of any stroller out there.  (You just grab a handle in the middle and the whole thing collapses itself.)  I ran it over moderate snow and ice this past winter with no big problems.  (In really bad storms I just put him in the Ergo with the weather cover and wore my maternity coat so that I could close it around both of us.)  The City Mini is also a fraction of the cost of strollers like the Bob, the Uppa Baby, etc.

Of course, now that we are expecting #2, I have to start considering a different stroller, so there may be something to be said for buying one now that will grow with your family if you're planning for more.  The Uppa Baby has an optional rumble seat and an optional rider platform; the new City Select has a ton of different configuration options.  Both are pretty expensive though.

If you haven't already been to Magic Beans, I'd head there.  They'll let you test drive any stroller out on the street.  They even encourage you to hit rough patches like T tracks, grass, etc. so that you get a real feel for it.

  • We have the City Mini with the Chicco adapter. Many of my friends have it as well.
  • I live in Brighton and have the Chicco travel system.  I highly suggest getting the city mini!  I'm going to get one today.  We're actually going to get a double b/c I am pregnant w/ number two, but if I wasn't I would get a single anyway.

I like the chicco stroller but this is the problem I'm having -my daughter doesn't fit into the stroller part yet. There are no adjustable shoulder straps like there are in the carseat. She's 6 months old, but they are just way too loose on her.   I can't keep her in the carseat when we go for walks b/c she gets way too hot.  When I take her out her back is sweaty. She now starts to cry half way into our walk b/c she gets too warm. The city mini has breathable fabric (i think), she can sit up in it or recline.  I wish I did more research when I was pregnant with my first b/c I would have got the chicco carseat w/ the city mini.  I love the carseat though. Have had no issues with it and it's in such good shape that we'll be able to use it for the new baby.

Also, the city mini folds up so small and it's super light. It folds in half and is 17lbs, I think.  I just went and looked at one and I'm telling you I was giddy with excitement!!!!  Can't wait to get ours.
