Potty Training

XP:PT, next step?

I posted this on 12-24 but then was told about this forum:

DD's been doing well with potty training.  It's clear that she has the control to go when on the potty.  She pees several times a day and pooped on the potty this morning.  She'll occasionally ask to go but it's usually when we instigate a trip.  Sometimes it's clear she just wants a sticker.

I'm wondering if cotton training pants would help her feel wet/accidents?  We've been using Pull-Ups.  Or just continue the course and she'll learn the control?  Thoughts?

ETA: I bought some of the Gerber cotton and waterproof training pants today.  The 2T-3T waterproof pants look huge!!!!  Are they supposed to go OVER the regular cotton training pants?

  • I'd say go straight with the underwear. Let her pick out her underwear. Use the gerber ones for night.

  • I second going straight to real underwear, it will be messy for a bit but worth it.

DS PT at 17 months and we went straight to underwear (the 2 T were huge- I had to roll the waist band down but I washed them on hot and they shrunk a bit and over the last few months they've shrunk more and they fit good) but we also CD so for us it was pointless to do pull-ups or training pants.  Please understand that at the age of your DD, although she's ready to PT- being able to control her bladder/bowels and go on the potty AND then tell you ahead of time is a lot for a 22 month old!!  Just get her use to going on the potty and take her on a schedule (unless she tells you).  My DS was awesome at telling us when he was 17  months old and then there were changes at home (going from parttime daycare to full time) and he fell back (didn't have accidents but we would have to take him vs. him telling us) and now about 1 month ago he's back to telling us verbally (and I say this because when we take him on a schedule I mean we wait until he's showing physical signs- and we say to him look you have to go potty lets go) about 80% of the time (although he generally tells my husband 100% of the time).
  • I also agree with the underwear. We started at 22 months and he has been doing great. We got rid of the diapers all at one time.
