My mom has arthritis and joint problems. She's also the type of person who eats the same things every single day. About five years ago she started getting really bad, to the point where she thought she must have more than arthritis going on. She stopped drinking Diet Coke because she heard it caused breast cancer. About two weeks after she stopped it, she could walk remarkably better and just in general felt worlds better.
About a month ago, she was just as bad, if not worse, than how she was five years ago. The doctor just wanted to put her on more medicine. I asked what she was eating/drinking. Turns out for the past several months she's been having a yogurt that contains aspertame (same artificial sweetener in Diet Coke) every day. She immediately stopped. A few weeks later she's walking better, pain is significantly diminished, etc.
And to top it off, she gets bloodwork taken regularly and some of her numbers were getting high and the doctors couldn't figure out what was going on. She just had her b/w taken again on Saturday and all her numbers are back within normal range (I don't specifically know what numbers, I think something to do with white blood cells).
Weird. She's probably not the only person in the world with this problem. All chemicals in foods weird me out. Who knows what they do.
Re: Interesting (and kind of long now that I see it written out)
My mom's heard a lot of crazy stuff at the hospital regarding aspartame so I'm not surprised at all (and it's great that your mom figured it out). My mom swears that drinking regular coke is better for you in the long run even with the extra calories. She's a coke addict though, lol. Personally, I get ridiculous headaches after just one pop with aspartame, so I always avoid it.
Seriously! And it seems like they sneak it into products all over the place. I wish they would take it off the market.

My DH has numbness in his teeth a few years ago. It freaked him out so bad he went to the doctor, ran a bunch of tests and had a brain MRI.
He stopped putting Equal in his coffee and it totally went away.

Yikes, really? That's freaky.
I was drinking a lot of Diet Pepsi at the time (too much, granted) and I started having terrible dreams. The kind you have to turn on lights and the TV and read a book to get past. Really really terrible ones. I stopped drinking the Pepsi and they went away immediately.
