ear infection and flying

I'm a lurker, but I need some reassurance.....

We've been dealing with a double ear infection for a few days, DS is on a strong antibiotic, and we fly out on Saturday.  I'm hoping his fever clears in time and we have numbing drops for his ears.

I'm really not in a position to cancel the flight, it's a vacation and we'll just be sitting around once we get there (so nothing stressful for DS).

Any suggestions on how to make the flight easier?  Should I consider pushing the flight back?  Or will it all just be ok?  Thoughts?

Re: ear infection and flying

  • Have you asked your pedi?

Honestly, unless YS has a quick recovery and is all better by then, I would probably push the flight back. But that's just me.

I would check with your pedi & see what they recommend.

  • Sorry, yes we've been to the pedi twice this week.  And a visit tomorrow for a recheck to make sure he's getting better.  They never mentioned postponing the flight when I told them we'd be flying.  They just suggested the recheck.

  • We flew to Hawaii and DD had a left ear infection. Pedi said she was ok to fly and she did great! You couldn't tell if it bothered her at all.

  • I wouldn't cancel.  DS had double ear infections when we flew last year.  He'd only been on antibiotics for a day when we flew.  His ears didn't seem to bother him at all.  He's never really had any problems with his ears (even w/o infections) on flights.

Ditto this.  It was DD's first ear infection and her first trip on a plane, too.  But I think it all depends on the severity of the ailment and the child.  She didn't lead on that she even had an ear infection and the pedi just happened to find it at her 18 month check up a few days before we were supposed to leave.  Good luck.

  • I would defintely push back the flight, but that's just me.  Think about how awful it is for adults to fly with a head cold, and we know how sooth ourselves and make our ears feel better.  Our little ones don't know how to do that.  My Pedi doesn't want our LO's to fly with ear infections.  JMO tho.  I actually cancelled my last trip because LO had an ear infection.

  • Oh great, about a 50/50 split on opinions.

He's had the infection for about 2 weeks, but just recently started acting like it bothered him (when the fever hit).  He was in for a well child when they found it.
