Postpartum Depression

Was/ is your child colicky? (GERD or Acid Reflux)

Just wondering about the correlation b/w tough babies and PPD.  Not to say I blame the baby for having an immature digestive system...but for the way we react to it.  I know I had the hardest time with my baby when he was going through stomach issues...now that he is better-I am doing much better. What do you think?

Re: Was/ is your child colicky? (GERD or Acid Reflux)

  • My first one didn't have any issues and my PPD was the worst with her. The second one has the worst colic and I was fine. I was on paxil or something, I don't remember, b/c my PPD was so bad with the first so that probably was why I was pretty ok. I am not on paxil and DD is 2 months old and the PPD is not as bad as the first but I am definatly PPD. I can't take any antidepressants b/c I found out I am allergic to them so I am just sitting this one out.

DD has reflux. She was dropping weight and it was a mess. Just got on Nutrageimun. ( I have no idea how that is spelled but am no getting up to look at the can) She is doing SO much better. Nothing worked with my second.

My opinion is that they are not related but having issues with a baby obviously aggravates the situation. This is my opinion mind you. I also was going through a lot of issues with the first. Transitioning to a parent with no support around other than the hubby. We have no one for help so it gets bleak at times. Plus, our families are always on the brink of some disaster. We have no help and then no one to lean on. I do think this can make a tough situation even more tough but I am the happiest person on earth most of the time. After I have a baby I am a wreck for some time after.

If you are having issues with reflux or PPD I do wish you the best of luck. I know how tough it is first hand.

  • My DD had really bad acid reflux....for me there was a correlation.  I found the first 4 months soooo very hard.  It's all just such a HUGE life transition and then you toss in your hormones, a screaming baby, and being home alone all day while DH goes to work and it made for a rough time for me.  As DD got better I too felt better.

  • Nope. DD has been about the easiest baby you could hope for.

  • DD has a little reflux, but most days she is perfectly fine. She sleeps 12 hours at night, has never really cried and is an easy happy baby all around. There's no correlation in our household between baby and PPD except that her birth triggered it.
