I like the name Dashiell, but I'm getting hung up on the pronunciation/spelling issue.
Dashiell is technically pronounced Dash - EE - el. But (and I'm pretty sure this is thanks to the Disney Pixar movie, The Incredibles), the pronunciation I've seen more and more is Dash - uhl.
I know Americans have bastardized a lot of spellings/pronunciations, but I just can't decide what to do about this name. I like it enough not to give up, but what do you guys think?

Re: Dashiell conundrum
Huh? Bastardized?
I take offense....
I hope you're joking. No one can deny that American English is just a bastardized mess of other languages. Our pronunciations are terrible. Dashiell is just the tip of the iceberg.
I like this name. However, I think most people (i.e. Americans) would lean towards pronouncing it Dash-uhl. I could be wrong though. I think it sounds good pronounced either way though.
Oh my, this is a hard one. I voted for "Dasheill pronounced DASH-uhl", but I could've just as easily voted for "Dasheill pronounced dash-EE-el".
My guess is that the Disney/Pixar guys pronounced it DASH-uhl because they wanted to emphasize the nn DASH, since he was so fast in the movie. But they did still spell it Dasheill, so I vote for this spelling, no matter how you decide to pronounce it.
Hm I'm going to have to go with 'other'. When I first see the name, I want to pronounce it dash-eel (maybe from the 'shiel' being similar to the word shield - ?!).
This site says it is DASH-yell, which is yet another slight variation from the ones you listed.
All of that said, I don't like the name with any of the pronunciations. I actually am not familiar with the name though and also didn't know whether it was for a boy or girl at first either.

This, so I didn't vote.
I would pronounce it Dash-EE-el from the spelling. Or at the very least, Dash-eel. Definitely not Dash-uhl. But I haven't seen "Incredibles".
And Dash-uhl looks like "Dash-Yule" to me. We have close friends with the last name Uhl and it is pronounced "Yule". So this whole post has me confused
.
Yeah, my first go at this was Dash - Eel, but I actually prefer the sound of Dash-uhl (which sounds more like Marshall when I say it out loud).
So this leaves me with three options really....bastardize the sound, bastardize the spelling, toss it out all together. Ugh.
