Ladies, I'm really sorry if this upsets anyone and I know it's probably not the best venue, but I'm not sure who else to ask.
Never in a million years did I think I'd have to think about using birth control ever again. Well...I'm faced with this decision once the new baby comes. Neither of us are ready to do anything permanent, so I pretty much had my mind made up that I'd get the copper (non-hormonal) IUD.
Now I'm wondering if this is a good idea or not. One of my good friends had one put in 2 days ago and she said it's the most pain she's ever experienced. I know another gal who said the same thing. However, neither of them have had children so I'm sure it's a different experience for them.
Do you or anyone you know have an IUD? After having kids, is it really that painful? None of my friends with kids have one or I'd ask them.
TIA and again, sorry if this post upsets anyone. Absolutely not my intention at all!
Re: IUD Question
I got Mirena two weeks ago, and I didn't feel anything -- seriously. The doc told me I would feel a pinch, and a few seconds later, I asked him if it was in because I hadn't felt a thing. He said that if you're still relatively close to delivery (I was about 10 weeks past), that your cervix is still soft enough (and I delivered via cesarean). He said that for some women, it is necessary to dilate them a bit, but usually if you've delivered in the past few months that isn't necessary. I took Motrin an our before, but it was totally unnecessary.
I will say that I have had breakthrough bleeding every since -- which is really ticking me off. I'm hoping it will subside after this first month.
(And, FWIW, I don't think it is poor form at all to ask this here. But maybe that is just me?)
Ah...so glad to hear someone whose had it done..and recently. My plan is to get it shortly after delivery (same timeframe as you) so hopefully I won't feel pain either. My friend is seriously still traumatized by the whole thing!
I had the Mirena put in at 3months pp and it was fairly painful (sorry!). The dr. said he had to open up my cervix some. Ironic, since I spent half of my pregnancy trying to get my cervix not to open too much.
I had cramping and bleeding that day, and then spotting off and on for around 2 weeks, I think. It's now been a month since I had it put in and I'm feeling fine. I go back tomorrow for a check-up to make sure it's still positioned correctly.
For those who have Mirena why did you choose that over Paragard? I'm thinking I want Paragard since it's hormone free and they say it's good for breastfeeding moms. I had really bad supply issues with Stella and am hoping I don't this time around.
I guess I'll do it as soon after having Hadley as I can since it seems like it's less painful if you do it sooner than later.
Thanks for all the feedback!
