Leapster 2 - good or no?

I'm trying to think of gift ideas for my DS who will be 4 in the fall.  If your DC has Leapster 2, what do you think of it?  Does your DC enjoy it?  What kind of games or other activities are they doing on it?  I have seen it on the shelves in the store, but really don't know anything about it or what it does.  Good for a 4 yr old?

Re: Leapster 2 - good or no?

  • DS got his for his birthday in April - loves it.  He has the Cars, Thomas the Train, Nemo, and Dora games (DD has the regular Leapster to avoid the fights and picked the Dora game).

Quite honestly, it is his 'quite time' toy....so I don't know a ton about it, but he love the Thomas and Dora games...there are different activities to earn points....math, spelling, following instructions, matching, etc.  Some are still over his head, but he has learned to spell some simple words (cat), simple math (1+2=3), and number recognition (like he'll have 22 tokens....so he can figure out the number without counting or recognizing in sequence).

So far, no complaints.  But I do suggest getting rechargeable batteries!

  • DS has it, has the Wolverine game, Toy Story, Diego, Nemo, CARS, and a few others.  They are educational, he's learning and really likes it. Perfect for car rides.  He was sent to his room the other day and was awfully quiet, I peeked in and he was playing it.  Learning letters and numbers and stuff.

    I think it's a great idea!

  • DS got one when he turned 4 and it was great.  He has a Dora game that was good for playing matching games, Thomas game that was good for matching and learning how to tell time and Nascar game that's good for math skills.  DD uses it too, she has a fairy game that's good for matching and learning number.  We have a Nemo game that neither one is too fond of.  They don't use it all the time, but it's nice for long car rides and a rainy day.

  • Not a leapster but I just bought a Tag for DS at a really good price and am putting it away for Christmas. I just noticed that the books for it are so expensive though! Does anybody have any good tips on whre to get them cheaper or do you know if/when they ever go on sale???

  • Mayor,

Target has them on sale occassionally.  Back in May, they were half price and I got some for a gift for a birthday that was coming up.

I can almost always find a $3 off from Leapfrog by googling.... "tag book coupon 2010"  I just used one last Sunday that is good thru the 31st I think.

Also, TRU occasionally has coupons....like $3 off a book, they just had one the expired Sunday (so I stacked the Leapfrog one and TRU on and got $6 off).

Finally, once you get registered with Leapfrog, they will send you codes for their site - sometimes they have 3 book bundles for like $25-28 and have a code for free shipping.

  • Just FYI - Leapster just came out with a new version - Leapster Explorer.  You may find good sales on Leapster 2 or you may want to get the new version.

  • The Leapster 2 is pretty cheap right now, but I think wea re going to buy DD the new Explorer...looks like it does a few more things, like e books.  It also has better graphics I hear.
  • You might want to consider the Leapster Explorer. It's the newest leapster that just came out this month. My dd just got hers for her birthday. So far, she watches the letter factory(movie) on it, plays lots of games, draws letters, and reads e-books on it.  I think it's really cool. DD is 3 and she can play it pretty well. I imagine at 4 it will be even better. It has a lot of educational games and more things for it are suppose to come out this fall. I heard even a camera attachment.

If you buy from leapfrog.com you can get 25% off by using code CONNECT25. They have a free leaplet deal as well. If you get the explorer, you need to add something to your cart though...like the $2.99 spring time tag jr book to use the code. You can end up getting 25% off, a free leaplet, and free shipping in the end.

  • DS is 4 and he never plays his Leapster anymore, but he's really technologically advanced for 4!  Otherwise he loved it when we bought it for him.
  • I have found discounts on Tag stuff (and other Leapfrog stuff) on the Leapfrog website.

  • A loves hers when she does pull it out. Her favorite is the Princess and the Frog.
