DH and I both like the name George. Obviously we're a long way to having a baby, but we made the mistake of saying how much we liked it even before I got pregnant.
My family hates it and thinks we're joking about it. I don't really care if they hate it, but I'm afraid everyone will think we just find George to be a funny baby name and think our baby name is a joke.
What do you all think of George? Even if it's NYS, would you laugh at it if a friend had a baby named George?
Re: Thoughts on George
It's DH's #1 choice for a boy right now. I don't hate it, but it's not my favorite.
Would I laugh at someone for using it? No. Every George I can think of (Cloony, St.Pierre, Stroumboulopoulos) is super good looking. As is the only George I know IRL. If someone else named their baby George I would think it was super cute.
I like G names right now quite a bit, and the letter O, so this name is visually appealing to me.
And I have to admit, George took some time to grow on me, but once I saw the children's book, George Shrinks, I was sold. Then you have great associatons like St. George and the Dragon. I think teachers would personally thank you for the name, and I find it refreshing in a world of Aidans/Braedons/Cadens.

I've seen on some baby name sites that George might be making a comeback. I think it has potential to be the new Jack. Its popularity doesn't matter to me, but I think Jack is a good comparison.
Both of our fathers are farmers and George means farmer, which I find super appealing.
Our other contender is William and Will for short. I hate hate hate Willy and am afraid of people saying that. So I'm thinking of just avoiding William all together.
Thanks for your input!

I personalyl don't like the name, but it's not a name I'd laugh about!
We picked an off the cuff name. Declan. I didn't expect to go this route at ALL. And quite a few people, especially my MIL, were very negative about it.
I didn't care. I told her "Well, get used to it because it's a top contender". And now that it is his name, I haven't heard anything from her about it since.

I like Henry, too! Henry and George would be a great sib set.
DH doesn't like Henry as much, so I don't think we'll be using it.

Generally, the parents set the rule for how the child will be called until the child makes up their own mind. IF people name chop, I'd think they'd go for Will first...I don't hear many people using Willy because of the penis association.

Yep, I agree. I also don't like it as an adult name for that matter. It is a family name on my side, but I would never use it.
George also equals country/redneck to me, maybe because of all the ones I knew in Virginia ... not sure.

Growing Up Olson
We used to have a dog named George and even then I thought it was an odd name for a dog (he came with the name). I wouldn't think of naming a precious little baby George. But that's just me. If you like it then, by all means, use it.

Absolutely love it. I am all for "little old man names" for boys.
I have my heart set on Gilbert, which makes my family want to disown me.
My husband's name is George, and I love it. I feel like it can grow with the child too. When they're young everyone will call them Georgie, and as they get older it turns into George.
I love it!
I think George is a perfectly good baby name. It's a bit old-fashioned, but not in a bad way (I like old-fashioned names)
That said, I probably wouldn't use it myself because I like names with more than one syllable. And I hear 'And I will hug him and squeeze him and name him George!' every time I think about it.
