I had my NT scan this morning and the nuchal fold measured 2.9mm. My dr.'s consider up to 2.5mm norm, with the national recommendation being 3.0mm. Since I'm outside the norm and almost 33 this puts me at a slightly elevated risk for chromosomal abnormalities.
I have to wait 5 days for blood work to come back but I will proceed with a perinatologist (high risk preg dr.) and another ultrasound next week. If the concern remains I will go forward with a CVS.
While I am a little scared, I'm trying to remain positive. I won't know anything definitive until next week. I just wanted to share this in case someone else has abnormal results.
*and please don't get yourself worked up into a froth if you have not had your NT scan yet.
Re: Abnormal results at NT Scan
I guess im confused.....if the recommended is 3.0?why is 2.9 not good?
"Nine out of 10 babies with a measurement between 2.5mm and 3.5mm will be completely normal (Nicolaides et al 1999)." Article here
I hope things go well for you moving forward. I am sending lots of good thoughts your way. My sonographer didn't even tell me the measurements b/c she said they're meaningless without the blood work. It's a correlation. So I am hoping that once they compare the two, you'll get good news.
Hang in there. You sound like you're handling this well. I had a scare with DD in my first pregnancy and took the same approach. Cautious, but moving forward. And she is perfect. We're here if you need us!
Sending lots of good thoughts your way.

This, exactly! Fingers crossed!!
My doctor said anything below 2.5 as well. I guess they must be conservative too.
Good luck, OP.
Sending thoughts your way. I hope your blood work comes back just fine and you do not have to go any further!
You and I are just about the same - I'm 33, 34 when baby is born. I had the NT scan done, it was 2.9. My OB also said it was on the "higher end of normal' and yet she's not seen - personally - any babies with this number to have any issues. She really well respected and been doing this a long time here in WA, so, she's delivered a LOT of babies. I did the blood test for the Combined to get a base line in order to see if we want to have an Amnio done at 16 weeks, we were passed the CVS time. My other two kids were 1.6 & 1.7 so I had a lot of concerns and I've been biting my nails for the results...its been a week and I have nothing.
That being said, I keep telling myself that this is an Odds test - so our chances are higher, but, its not a confirmation by any means. And, overall, chances are things are fine. My sister has an 11 month old, that she delivered at 35, and his test came in at 2.7, so she was higher as well for her age....he's just fine!
My NT was done when I was just about 13 weeks and from all I've research, the number will be higher the later in the cycle...meaning at 11 weeks it will be lower than at 13. And, a lot of other countries look at 3.5 and below to be well within normal. I'm not sure why the US is so conservative in our numbers.
Ditto - I've always heard that without the blood results the measurements are fairly meaningless. Hope you get more positive news once those come back. And 2.9 is still within the normal for national recommendations, so I'd try not to get too worried. T&P!
