Yeah, because I know what's in the envelope....

A patient is going to be having surgery that is already scheduled.  I slide them some paperwork to sign.  I say okay that's it, we'll see you for your post op.  The lady says, holding up an envelope "so everything I need to know is in here, right?"

My answer.....

"As far as you know."

Re: Yeah, because I know what's in the envelope....

  • I know I'm not the brightest star in the sky, but never in my life have I encountered more idiot statements and assumptions than since working at this doctors office.
  • Honestly, the story makes no sense to me.

  • me, neither, veloelle. LOL

I'm guessing the doctor didn't give her a whole lot of information about a procedure she's going to be undergoing? And she was asking you if everything she needed to know leading up to her procedure was in that packet?  And if you're giving her the packet, she'd reasonably assume you'd know what was in it?

Not sure why she's an idiot.

  • The surgery scheduler told her everything she needed to know.  Then, that very 'everything she needed to know' came to her on paper in an envelope in the mail.  Today she had her pre-op appt to go over blood work and/or any tests she may have had.

At check out, after she has seen the doctor, she waves the envelope to me asking if everything she needs is in it.  I don't know - read what's in the envelope. It's your envelope with information regarding your surgery.  If it's not clear to you, then you probably should have asked the doctor before you're about to walk out the door.  And it's not anything she would have given at check in and put into her chart for the doctor to review so she's not asking if he went through it and put it all back.

  • I put forms in front of people and ask them to read and sign.  People then say "well, what am I signing?"

    Uh, read it.....

Her question about what was in the envelope is along the same "duh" level.

  • I'm still missing it. You work in the office, she has a question about paperwork mailed to her from the doctor's office. I have no doubt you encounter idiots all day, as that is the nature of a customer service job. But I fail to see it in this case, especially if she's never had surgery or it's been a long time.

  • Inside this envelope contains the amount of what she pays for whatever her insurance does not cover, when she needs to be at the surgical center, what time her surgery is, what is being done to her, and what specific instructions she needs to follow for directly before her surgery - like no eating before midnight the night before your surgery.  This is information she got at least a week or two before her pre-op appt.

If she read it herself, she would know what was in it.  It wasn't even anything that needed to come with her to the visit.  It had nothing to do with her pre-op appt.
