Scheduled CS / early labor??

My son was an emergency c-section four years ago.  We are expecting now and are scheduled for another CS the first week of Sept.  My doc thinks it would be best because I am small and my son was huge!  So thinking along the lines this one might be the same way.  My question is since we are scheduled for the CS, what happens if we go into labor early?  Will I still have my surgery or have to try and have her the old fashioned way?  I forget to ask my OB when I see her, plus I wanted to see what everyone else thought.  Or if anyone else had been in the situation.

Re: Scheduled CS / early labor??

  • It's up to you and your OB. If there is no medical reason for a c/s, then you could try to have a VBAC if you want to and if your OB does them. But many don't. I believe it is harder to do a c/s when you're in labor, but they likely would be able to stop your labor long enough to do a c/s without any problems.

I did have a friend whose water broke as she was checking in for her scheduled c/s. She ended up with an emergency c/s, but I believe that was for a prolapsed cord, so something else went wrong, it wasn't an emergency just because she was in labor.

I had a planned VBAC the day before my c/s was scheduled (c/s was my backup plan at 41wk 3 days, he was born at 41wk 2 days).

  • My SIL had an emergency c/s with her 1st and had one scheduled for her 2nd this past March.  Her water broke the night before her scheduled c/s so she went to the hospital and had a c/s.  It was not considered an ER one since she had one planned anyway.

  • totally depends on your doctor.  I have a c/s scheduled for 40w1d and if I go into labor on my own before that, I'll be allowed a trial of labor.  But you really need to ask your doctor so you know what to expect.
  • i really don't know much about cs, so this may not be worth asking.  i was just wondering like a previous post, would they allow you to try a vbac if possible to avoid surgery, if there aren't any other complications?  i know so many doctors are nervous about larger babies for so many reasons, but i was able to deliver both of my kiddos and they were good size babies (both 9 pounds).  i'm i also on the small size, only 5'3", 130lbs at delivery.

just wondering.  either way, best of luck to you!
